Section 34 of 35 in Yitro — 15 segments
Segment 1
HONOUR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER — with every kind of honour, to gladden them with worthy deeds, as it says, “The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice” (Prov. 23, 24); and this is the honour of his father and of his mother.
Segment 2
Ra'aya Meheimna. “Honour your father and your mother.” Honour Him with clean clothing, that is, the corners of the commandment. “Honour the Lord with your substance” (Prov. 3, 9): this is Torah and commandments. So it is written, “Length of days is in her right hand; in her left hand…” (Prov. 3, 16). For the poor man is no man except in respect of the Torah and the commandments; and this is known, since the sages of the Mishnah have laid it down that none is poor save in the Torah and in the commandments, for a man’s wealth is Torah and commandments.
Segment 3
And therefore, “Honour the Lord with your substance” — and do not labour in the Torah in order to be magnified by it, as the Companions have explained: “and do not make them a crown with which to magnify yourself”, and do not say, “I will study so that they may call me Rabbi”; but rather, “Magnify the Lord with me” (Ps. 35). “Honour the Lord with your substance” — like a son, who is bound to the honour of his father and his mother.
