Section 35 of 35 in Yitro — 11 segments
Segment 1
YOU SHALL NOT KILL. YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY. YOU SHALL NOT STEAL. “Not.” In all these three the accent makes a pause. And were it not that the accent makes a pause, there could never be any ordering of the world, and it would be forbidden to us to put a person to death, even though he transgressed the Torah. But since the accent makes a pause, it is forbidden and it is permitted.
Segment 2
“You shall not commit adultery.” Were it not that the accent makes a pause, it would be forbidden even to beget children, or to rejoice with one’s wife with the joy of the commandment. But since the accent makes a pause, it is forbidden and it is permitted. “You shall not steal.” Were it not that the accent makes a pause, it would have been forbidden even to steal the mind of one’s teacher in the Torah, or the mind of a sage, in order to look into him; or for a judge who judges a case according to the pleading, who must steal the mind of the deceitful man, and steal the mind of them both, in order to bring the judgement to light. But since the accent makes a pause, it is forbidden and it is permitted.
Segment 3
YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST YOUR NEIGHBOUR. Here the accent makes no pause, because it is forbidden altogether and in every way. And in all the words of the Torah the Holy One, blessed be He, has set supernal mysteries, and has taught men the way in which to be set right, and in which to walk, as it says: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you for your profit, who leads you by the way that you should go” (Isa. 48, 17).
