Zohar, Vayikra 36

Section 36 of 67 in Vayikra — 2 segments

Segment 1

“Then he shall restore that which he took by robbery”: there the Companions asked, why is it written of robbery, “then he shall restore that which he took by robbery”, and no more? But we have explained it: this one set the supernal fear as the lower; and this one who steals set the lower fear over against himself, and not the supernal fear.

Segment 2

What is written above? “If a soul sins” (folio 13b), as we have said — that the Torah and the Holy One, blessed be He, wonder at him and say, “If a soul sins,” etc. And it is written, “If a soul commits a trespass,” etc. “Or if a soul swears,” etc. R. Isaac said: “soul” is written, and not “spirit”, and not “super-soul”. And here it is body and soul, as it is written, “And it shall be, if he has sinned and is guilty, then he shall restore that which he took by robbery.” Whoever wishes to set his deeds right, as we have said: “then he shall restore.” What is “then he shall restore”? But it is like one who sets deeds right, so that he may bring the springs of water back to their places, to water the plantings; for it was he who caused, by his sins, that they were withheld from them. And therefore, “then he shall restore that which he took by robbery,” etc., as has been said. (Thus far.)
