Zohar, Vayikra 35
Section 35 of 67 in Vayikra — 8 segments
Segment 1
R. Jose said: it is written, “The nakedness of your father, and the nakedness of your mother, you shall not uncover” (Lev. 18, 7). And it is written, “she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness.” And, as we have learnt, “she is your mother” — assuredly. Now if he has uncovered her nakedness, to whom must he restore her? Assuredly, to set right what he uncovered.
Segment 2
For it has been taught: when the evil inclination grows strong in a man, it grows strong only in those forbidden relations, and all sins take hold in that nakedness. And it is written, “you shall not uncover.” When it is set right, it is set right over against that which he uncovered; and this is called repentance.
Segment 3
R. Isaac said: all the sins of the world take hold in this, until the Mother is uncovered on their account. And when she is uncovered, all those children are uncovered on her account. And it is written, “You shall not take the dam with the young” (Deut. 22, 6). And when the world below is set right, all is set right, until the setting right ascends to the holy Mother; and she is set right and covered from that which was uncovered. And therefore it is written, “Happy is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered” (Ps. 32, 1); and then it is called repentance, repentance indeed. And then it is called the Day of Atonement, as it is written, “from all your sins before the Lord you shall be clean” (Lev. 16, 30).
