Segment 1
He said that prophecy is of the male world, whereas dreams are of the female world, and from the one to the other is a descent of six grades. Prophecy is from both the right side and the left side, but dreams are only from the left side. Dream branches out into many grades in reaching here below; hence dreams are universally diffused throughout the world, each man seeing the kind of dream that answers to his own grade. Prophecy, on the other hand, is confined to its own region.
Segment 2
Observe what is written: “And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it” (Gen. 28, 12). He discoursed on the verse: It came, it came, the word of the Lord to Ezekiel the son of Buzi the priest, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar, and the hand of the Lord was there upon him (Ezek. 1, 3). “It came, it came”: it was a prophecy for that hour, one that was needed on account of the exile, because the Shekinah went down with Israel into exile, and Ezekiel saw what he saw according to the hour. And although that place was not fitting for this, therefore “It came, it came”. What is “It came, it came”? Rather, one “it came” above and one “it came” below; for it is written, “a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven” — it takes above and it takes below. “It came, it came”: one above and one below. (See at the end of the book what is wanting here, sign 50.)
Segment 3
Observe, this ladder is made fast in two worlds, above and below. “In the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar”: “in the land of the Chaldeans”, in a place where exile rests — and with all that, “by the river Chebar”. What is “the river Chebar” (kebar=already)? It is that it had already been, from before this, a river upon which the Shekinah rested, as it is written, “And a river went out of Eden to water the garden,” etc. (Gen. 2, 10); and this is one river of those four rivers. And because she rested upon it from before this, and had been upon it already, she rests in it now, and it was revealed to Ezekiel.
