Segment 1א׳

וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקֹב אֶל יוֹסֵף אֵל שַׁדַּי נִרְאָה אֵלַי בְּלוּז בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן. רִבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר, לוּז דָּא יְרוּשָׁלַ ם עִלָּאָה, דְּאַשְׁרָאָה שְׁכִינְתָּא בֵּינָהָא. אָמַר יַעֲקֹב עִלָּאָה לְתַתָּא, הַב לִי בִּרְכָתָא דְּהוּא בָּעֵי, לְאַנְפִּישׁ יַתְכוֹן אֲנָא, וּלְמִיתַּן יַת אַרְעָא לִבְנֵיכוֹן. לוּז זוֹ יְרוּשָׁלַ ם עִלָּאָה, קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, הַב רַבְרְבָא דְּהַוְויָן בְּרָכָה דָּא עַל יְדֵיהּ, בְּאַרְעָא רָבְיָיא, אֲבָל בְּרָא, לְאַרְעָא אָחֳרָא, לָא יְהֵא בִּרְכָתָא.

AND JACOB SAID TO JOSEPH: GOD ALMIGHTY APPEARED TO ME AT LUZ IN THE LAND OF CANAAN. R. Abba said: Luz — this is the supernal Jerusalem, in whose midst the Shekinah dwells. The supernal Jacob said to the one below: give me the blessing that he desires — to make you numerous, and to give the land to your children. Luz — this is the supernal Jerusalem. The Holy One, blessed be He: give the great one through whose hand this blessing comes, in the land that increases; but outside, in another land, there will be no blessing.

Segment 2ב׳

רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (משלי כ״ז:י״ד) מְבָרֵךְ רֵעֵהוּ בְּקוֹל גָּדוֹל בַּבֹּקֶר הַשְׁכֵּם קְלָלָה תֵּחָשֶׁב לוֹ, קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא קָרָא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל אַחִים וְרֵעִים. מַאי בִּרְכָתָא יָהַב לוֹן, דִּיהוֹן הַאי עַמָּא דַּכְיָא תְּחוֹת יְדֵיהּ, וְלִמֶהֱוֵי עֲלֵיהוֹן נָטִיר.

R. Eleazar discoursed on the verse: “He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him” (Prov. 27, 14). The Holy One, blessed be He, called Israel brothers and friends. What blessing did He give them? That this pure people should be under His hand, and that He should be a keeper over them.

Segment 3ג׳

זַכָּאָה חוּלְקֵהוֹן דְּהַאי עַמָּא דַכְיָא, דְּהוּא עֲלֵיהוֹן, דְּאִקְרֵי בָנִים חֲבִיבִים יַתִּיר מֵעִלָּאָה, כְּתִיב, (דברים ד) בָּנִים אַתֶּם לַה', כֹּלָּא בְּדִיל דָּא. מַאי הוּא, בְּדִיל דְּאִשְׁתְּלִים שְׁמָא בְּחוֹתָמָא דִלְהוֹן, דְּאִינוּן גְּזִירִין.

Happy is the portion of this pure people, over whom He is, who are called beloved children more than the supernal ones. It is written: “You are children of the Lord” (Deut. 4). All this is for the sake of this. What is it? That the Name should be completed in their seal, in that they are circumcised.

תָּא חֲזֵי, בְּאַנְפּוֹי דְּאֵינָשָׁא שְׁמָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, וְחַסְרָא יוּ"ד מִנֵּיהּ, וְלָא אִשְׁתְּלִים. אֲתָא אַבְרָהָם וְחִבֵּב לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, וְאָמַר לֵיהּ בָּךְ אִשְׁתְּלִים שְׁמָא, וְאִתְגְּזַר, וְאִשְׁתְּלִים שְׁמָא בְּיוּ"ד דְּמִילָה. בְּאַנְפּוֹי דְּאֶנָּשָׁא שי"ן דְּשד"י, וְד', חָסֵר יו"ד, אִשְׁתְּלִים בְּיו"ד דְּמִילָה, וּכְדֵין אִקְרוּן בָּנִים לַה', בְּנִין קַדִּישִׁין.

Observe: on a man’s face is the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, but a Yod is lacking from it, and it is not complete. Abraham came and showed love to the Holy One, blessed be He, and He said to him: “Through you the Name shall be completed.” And he was circumcised, and the Name was completed by the Yod of circumcision. On a man’s face is the Shin of Shaddai, and the Daleth; the Yod is lacking, and it is completed by the Yod of circumcision. And then they are called “children of the Lord”, holy children.

Segment 5ה׳

וְכַד מְסָאֲבִין לֵיהּ לְהַאי אָת קַיָּימָא קַדִּישָׁא, וְעֲאִיל לֵיהּ לִרְשׁוּ אָחֳרָא, סָלִיק מִנֵּיהּ הַאי קִדּוּשָׁא דְּחוֹתָמָא, וְהוּא כְּמָה דְחָרִיב עַלְמָא, וְסָאִיב חוֹתָמָא, דְּאִשְׁתְּלִים בֵּיהּ שְׁמָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, וְהָא הוּא חָרִיב עַלְמָא.

And when they defile this sign of the holy covenant and bring it into an alien domain, that holiness of the seal departs from him, and he is as one who lays the world waste; and he defiles the seal by which the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, is completed — and indeed he lays the world waste.
