Section 7 of 86 in Vayechi — 9 segments
Segment 1
AND ISRAEL STRENGTHENED HIMSELF AND SAT UPON THE BED. And the mystery of the verse: “At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people, and there shall be a time of trouble” (Dan. 12, 1). R. Simeon said: This is the might of the hand of Michael the chieftain. AND HE SAT UPON THE BED — how much had he bowed down before this. To whom did he bow? He bowed to the bed; the bed lay open from him. It was to the circumcision that he bowed, for she was beloved of him.
Segment 2
“For Judah has profaned the holiness of the Lord which He loves, and has married the daughter of a strange god” (Mal. 2, 11). When His radiance was withdrawn from him because of their sins, he had no standing before Him, and the Matron was driven out from the King — because she could not leave her children among the nations for them to be slain; and He was in the Holy Land, in this, that the nations were strangers to His people. He desired to say: the Shekinah entered among them into exile. And at the season when He was not in the Land, and she was in the land of the nations, by the radiance of Israel the nations round about them were held in check.
Segment 3
It has been taught. R. Jose said: Two chieftains were beneath the holy Throne of Glory, and one of them was, by His name, set over the bed, dwelling in the treasury of the palace. And now that we are in exile, there is left among us none but this one who is of his kind, and he is hewn from the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He.
