Ra'aya Meheimna (the Faithful Shepherd). A precept: to perform the burnt offering according to its law; and of it has been stated, “This is the law of the burnt offering,” etc. Five fires used to come down upon the offering: a fire that eats and does not drink; a fire that drinks and does not eat; a fire that eats and drinks; a fire that eats moist and dry; a fire that neither eats nor drinks. Corresponding to them are these: “This is the law of the burnt offering”, one; “it is the burnt offering on the hearth”, two; “upon the altar”, three; “all night”, four; “and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it”, five.
Segment 2
And the Masters of the Mishnah have explained: the burnt offering ascends wholly on high. And this is binah: He — five are her visions. Yod: the only daughter — “and the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire” (Ex. 24, 17). Vau: the light of the pupil of the eye. And she is a fire that drinks all the waters of the Torah, and eats all the offerings of prayer. And she eats moist and dry: these are the plain senses of the Torah, which are like dry wood, and the mysteries of the Torah, which are like moist wood. And this is a fire that eats moist and dry.
Segment 3
And further, she eats moist: all the offerings that used to be brought near in prayer for positive commandments. And dry: all the offerings that used to be brought near in prayer for negative commandments. And this is stoning, burning, slaying and strangling, for positive commandments and for negative commandments. These are the offerings of the Shekinah — prayer, for the commandments of doing and of not doing. And corresponding to these five visions they instituted five prayers on the Day of Atonement. And corresponding to the pupil of the eye are the Ten Days of Repentance. He corresponds to the light of the pupil of the eye; the five afflictions correspond to the last He.
