Ra'aya Meheimna (the Faithful Shepherd). THE FIRST OF YOUR DOUGH YOU SHALL SET APART AS CHALLAH, ETC. (Num. 15, 20). This precept is to set apart challah for the priest. Challah — such is its reckoning: forty-three eggs, and a fifth of an egg, one out of five. And there is a fifth that is one out of fifty, which is the Nun. And this is the sign Magen, which is Michael, Gabriel, Nuriel. Challah is the Shekinah; for in the place where these angels are, there the patriarchs are, and in the place where the patriarchs are, there the Shekinah is. And in her is vayechal, in her we pray. This is what is written, “And Moses besought the Lord his God” (Ex. 32, 11); “O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant” (Deut. 3, 24). And in her the merit of the fathers took hold, and in her the merit of the fathers was spent for the wicked, who were receiving their reward in this world.
Segment 2
For from the side of the right, where the Yod is, which is chochmah, the beginning of the Tetragrammaton, He shows merit upon her children from the right, where the two hundred and forty-eight positive commandments are. From the side of the last letter He, which is to the left, of gevurah, where the negative commandments are, which are three hundred and sixty-five — there the utterly wicked are judged, the merit of the fathers is spent for them, and the Holy Name is turned about for them into He-Vau-He-Yod. And we have learnt it from Haman the wicked: “Yet all this avails me nothing” (Esth. 5, 13). (End of Ra'aya Meheimna)
