Segment 1א׳

(במדבר ט״ו:א׳-ב׳) וַיֹּאמֶר יְיָ אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵאמֹר דַּבֵּר אֶל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְגוֹ' וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם צִיצִית עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם לְדוֹרוֹתָם וְגוֹ'. רִבִּי חִזְקִיָּה פָּתַח, (זכריה ג׳:א׳) וַיַּרְאֵנִי אֶת יְהוֹשֻׁעַ הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל וְגוֹ'. כַּמָה זַכָּאִין אִינּוּן יִשְׂרָאֵל, דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בָּעֵי בִּיקָרֵהוֹן עַל כָּל בְּנֵי עָלְמָא, וְיָהַב לוֹן אוֹרַיְיתָא קַדִּישָׁא, וְיָהַב לוֹן נְבִיאֵי מְהֵימְנֵי, דִּמְדַבְּרֵי לְהוּ בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, בְּאֹרַח קְשׁוֹט.

AND THE LORD SAID TO MOSES, SPEAK UNTO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL… THAT THEY MAKE THEMSELVES FRINGES ON THE CORNERS OF THEIR GARMENTS, ETC. R. Hizkiah adduced here the verse: “And he showed me Joshua the high priest”, etc. (Zech. 3, 1).

Segment 2ב׳

תָּא חֲזֵי, כָּל נְבִיאֵי וּנְבִיאֵי דְּאוֹקִים קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, כֻּלְּהוּ אִתְגְּלֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא עָלַיְיהוּ, בְּדַרְגִּין עִלָּאִין קַדִּישִׁין, וְחָמוּ זִיו יְקָרָא קַדִּישָׁא דְּמַלְכָּא מֵאֲתָר עִלָּאָה, אֲבָל לָא קָרִיב כְּמֹשֶׁה, דְּהֲוָה קָרִיב לְמַלְכָּא יַתִּיר מִכֹּלָּא, דְּהָא זַכָּאָה חוּלָקֵיהּ יַתִּיר מִכָּל בְּנֵי עָלְמָא, דְּעָלֵיהּ כְּתִיב, (במדבר י״ב:ח׳) פֶּה אֶל פֶּה אֲדַבֶּר בּוֹ וּמַרְאֶה וְלֹא בְחִידוֹת. וּשְׁאַר נְבִיאֵי, הֲווֹ חָמָאן מֵאֲתָר רְחִיקָא, כְּמָה דְּאַתְּ אָמֵר (ירמיהו ל״א:ג׳) מֵרָחוֹק יְיָ נִרְאָה לִי.

Observe: all the prophets and prophets whom the Holy One, blessed be He, raised up for Israel — the Holy One, blessed be He, was revealed to them all in supernal holy grades, and they saw the holy radiance of the glory of the King from a supernal place; but not near like Moses, who was near to the King more than all, for happy is his portion more than all the children of the world. Of him it is written, “With him do I speak mouth to mouth, even manifestly, and not in dark speeches” (Num. 12, 8). And the rest of the prophets saw from a far place, as it says, “From afar the Lord appeared to me” (Jer. 31, 3).

(שמות י"א ע"ב) אָמַר רִבִּי חִזְקִיָּה, הָכִי אוֹלִיפְנָא, כְּתִיב (שמות ב׳:א׳) וַיֵּלֶךְ אִישׁ מִבֵּית לֵוִי וַיִּקַּח אֶת בַּת לֵוִי. וַיֵּלֶךְ אִישׁ: דָּא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר (שמות ט״ו:ג׳) יְיָ אִישׁ מִלְחָמָה. מִבֵּית לֵוִי: דָּא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, אֲתָר דְּחָכְמָה עִלָּאָה, וְהַהוּא זוֹהַר (ס"א נהר) מִתְחַבְּרָן כַּחֲדָא, דְּלָא מִתְפָּרְשָׁן לְעָלְמִין. מִבֵּית לֵוִי: דְּאַשְׁרֵי לִוְיָתָן (ס"א כל חידו) בִּלְחוֹדוֹי בְּעָלְמָא, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב (תהילים ק״ד:כ״ו) לִוְיָתָן זֶה יָצַרְתָּ לְשַׂחֶק בּוֹ. וַיִּקַּח אֶת בַּת לֵוִי, דָּא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, אֲתָר דִּנְהִירוּ דְּסִיהֲרָא נָהִיר.

(Shemot, folio 11b.) R. Hizkiah said: So have we learnt. It is written, “And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi” (Ex. 2, 1). “And there went a man”: this is the Holy One, blessed be He, as it says, “The Lord is a man of war” (Ex. 15, 3). “Of the house of Levi”: this is the Holy One, blessed be He, the place of supernal wisdom; and that radiance (a variant reads: river) are joined as one, and are never parted. “Of the house of Levi”: for He caused Leviathan (a variant reads: all joy) to dwell alone in the world; this is what is written, “There is Leviathan, whom You have formed to sport with” (Ps. 104, 26). “And took to wife a daughter of Levi”: this is the Holy One, blessed be He, the place where the light of the moon shines.

Segment 4ד׳

וַתַּהַר הָאִשָּׁה וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן. הָאִשָּׁה וַדַּאי, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר (בראשית ב׳:כ״ג) לְזֹאת יִקָּרֵא אִשָּׁה. בְּקַדְמִיתָא בַּת לֵוִי, הָכִי הוּא וַדַּאי. וְכִי בַּת לֵוִי בְּקַדְמִיתָא, וְהַשְׁתָּא אִשָׁה. אֶלָּא הָכִי אוֹלִיפְנָא, אִתְּתָא עַד לָא אִזְדַּוְּוגַת, אִתְקְרִיאַת בַּת פְּלוֹנִי, בָּתַר דְּאִזְדַּוְּוגַת. אִתְקְרֵי אִשָׁה, וְהָכָא, בַּת וְאִשָּׁה, כֹּלָּא בְּחַד דַּרְגָּא הוּא.

“And the woman conceived, and bore a son.” “The woman,” certainly, as it says, “She shall be called Woman” (Gen. 2, 23). At first “a daughter of Levi” — so it is, certainly. And is she “a daughter of Levi” at first, and now “a woman”? But so have we learnt: a woman, before she is wedded, is called the daughter of such a one; after she is wedded she is called a woman. And here, “daughter” and “woman” — all is in one grade.

וַתִּצְפְּנֵהוּ ג' יְרָחִים, אִלֵּין תְּלַת יַרְחִין דְּדִינָא קַשְׁיָא שַׁרְיָא בְּעָלְמָא. וּמַאי נִינְהוּ. תַּמּוּ"ז וְאָ"ב וְטֵבֵ"ת. מַאי קָא מַשְׁמַע לָן. דְּעַד דְּלָא נָחַת מֹשֶׁה לְעָלְמָא, שְׁכִיחַ הֲוָה הוּא לְעֵילָּא, וְעַל דָּא אִזְדַּוְּוגַת בֵּיהּ שְׁכִינְתָּא מִן יוֹמָא דְּאִתְיְלִיד. מִכָּאן אָמַר רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, רוּחֵיהוֹן דְּצַדִּיקַיָּיא שְׁכִיחִין אִינּוּן לְעֵילָּא, עַד לָא יֶחתוּן לְעָלְמָא.

“And she hid him three months”: these are the three months in which harsh judgement rests upon the world. And what are they? Tammuz and Ab and Tebeth. What does this teach us? That before Moses came down into the world he was present above; and therefore the Shekinah was joined with him from the day he was born. From here R. Simeon said: The spirits of the righteous are present above before they come down into the world.
