Segment 1
Round about those pillars there are lattices, a work of design: red fire, and white light, and threads of gold, round and round, encircling on every side. And a fountain of water, as it says, “And it shall come to pass in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem: half of them toward the eastern sea, and half of them toward the western sea.”
Segment 2
Here the Head of the Academy expounded this verse within, and his voice was heard outside. While he was expounding this verse, (O holy one, O holy one) the voice of a child was roused outside — that child who was expounding his lesson and learning before a certain pillar of the world, the son of R. Judah, whom you brought up. And they were holding him for judgement, and his voice was roused outside upon this verse, and he said: The waters that are below, how do they go up above it, to a place higher than it by many grades? And what need have those waters on high? And how can a place from which all (apples) springs and streams issue, and there is no ceasing to springs and streams, be watered from a dry place? Who has seen the digging of a well give water to a spring that flows? And does Jerusalem give water to the eastern sea, the place from which all the waters of the world come out and well up? O holy pious one, at this voice all the voices of the sons of the Academies that were there were stilled and listened; and therefore the masters of judgement could not draw near to him.
Segment 3
R. Simeon wept. He said to him: Do not weep, holy lamp; happy is your portion, that even children speak from you the hidden mysteries of the Torah. Come, and I will tell you what the sons of the Academies did over the voice of that child. When the voice of that child entered like an arrow within, they all listened to him. In that hour the Head of the Academy was shaken, and all those who were before him, and he said: Who are they that do not let that son of the living God enter? Three pillars that stand before the Head of the Academy rose and took hold of him, and he entered. And all the sons of the Academies gathered to him. The Head of the Academy said: Say your verses, holy son.
