Segment 1

But begin, and gird your weapon, and tie your knot, for it is the time to disclose, as you began the work. For upon the face of the breadth of the house is the porch of the court within. In this court there are twelve doorways, according to the number of the tribes of Israel. On one doorway is written Reuben, and on another doorway is written Simeon; and so all the tribes of Israel are inscribed upon those doorways, for the time when they shall go up to appear before the Master of the world. Whoever enters by the doorway on which Reuben is inscribed, if he is of the tribe of Reuben the doorways receive him; and if not, they cast him outside. And so with them all: the doorways receive none but him who is of that tribe which is inscribed upon them. And by this each and every one shall be engraved and made known.

Segment 2

Three hundred and sixty-five pillars of blazing light there are on every side, of those four sides. All these pillars are called living pillars, because their light does not stand still in one place. And they all — these go up and those come down, and they give place one to the other. Those that go up strike one against another and make music with a melody; and those that come down do the same. Those that go up and make music with a melody — what melody do they make? An orphan song: “A Psalm. Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvellous things,” etc. (Ps. 98, 1). A new song — and is there an old song? But a song which until now the holy angels have not praised Him with, because it is new. What is the reason that it is new? Because that one which renews its youth praises Him and says it to Him. And so said the Head of the Academy: this one is called new, and it is new, because it cleaves to the sun and is not parted from it — to shut out the other side, in which there is no renewal, of which it is written, “and there is nothing new” (Eccl. 1). It is old and worn out, and is not renewed. (A variant reads: and does not bear offspring; for if it bore offspring it would blur the whole world.)

Segment 3

Again the Head of the Academy opened: Sarah was renewed in delight; her own grade caused it, for it is written, “After I am worn out shall I have pleasure (ednah)?” (Gen. 18, 12). What is ednah? A drawing down of supernal Eden. And because it was drawn down upon her from the side of the female, ednah is written with a He; and therefore hayetah is written, and not hayah.
