Segment 1
The Head of the Academy opened and said: “And the Lord said to Abram: Get out of your country,” etc. (Gen. 12, 1). This is because a light shines in him in this same way. Whoever is not found worthy in this place, let him go and take himself to another place, and he will be found worthy in it. A piece of wood that burns and whose light does not rise and shine in it — they shake it, and the light rises in it, and it gives light. And we were ready to listen; but in order to come to you we did not want to be delayed. R. Simeon rejoiced.
Segment 2
They said to him: O holy pious one, all the words that are within the Torah are small words, in every single word. And those small words — how great and supernal are the words within them, until they have no measure! For there is no doubt within them, but the clear meaning of the Torah upon its own true ground. And now the Head of the Academy is expounding hidden words upon this: why the root of the soul does not shine in one place, and is found worthy to be given light in another place. And until now we have not been found worthy of them, because of coming to you.
Segment 3
And another word we were found worthy to hear from him: a spirit that goes stripped bare in that world without children — his wife shall be made a vessel for him, that he himself may be built up. What is the reason? His wife is the lamp that was kindled from him, and the two of them were one lamp; this light issued from that light. This one was quenched, and it is kindled from within his own light itself, because they were one light.
