Segment 1

R. Ilai discoursed on the verse: “You shall be tamim (perfect) with the Lord your God” (Deut. 18, 13). What is the difference between tam and tamim? Of Abraham it is written, “Walk before Me and be tamim” (Gen. 17, 1). Of Jacob, who was perfected further, it is written, “And Jacob was a tam man” (Gen. 25, 27). Why is he called a tam man? Because no refuse at all remained in him, for in him was the uncovering.

Segment 2

By what was he uncovered (a variant reads: the uncovering was in him, in that he was uncovered) and purified from that refuse? Because that place which holds fast to the refuse, within which the place of the uncovering begins, is an ox, the figure on the left of His throne. And that ox is called a tam ox, for the chariot of the throne has the impress of the covenant in it; and therefore this ox is called tam. And Jacob laid hold of it within him, and by this ox he performed the uncovering, and removed all the filth of the refuse.

Segment 3

In the Mishnah of Bezalel it is written: “And God remembered Rachel” (Gen. 30, 22). Of Sarah, visiting is written (Gen. 21), and of Rachel, remembrance is written. Why? Because “remember” is impressed upon Jacob, who is the perfect covenant, when Joseph was born (a variant reads: was made). And by what? When he took the ox with him, so that it should not hold fast to the other side. And therefore Joseph is called “the firstborn of an ox” (Deut. 33, 17), the firstborn of that ox that Jacob took: “his firstborn ox” (and he thrust that ox away).
