Segment 1
“And the tenth part of an ephah” (Num. 28, 5) — why? Rather, “the tenth part of an ephah” corresponds to the Community of Israel, who is the tenth of the grades, and she must be placed between the two arms. And she is the fine flour of bread, and she is bread. And because she is bread, no chieftain of the world was appointed over the bread of the five species — which is wheat, and barley, and rye, etc. And He set no chieftain over them, but the Holy One, blessed be He, alone.
Segment 2
And therefore, whoever slights bread and throws it on the ground, poverty pursues him. And one chieftain is appointed over this, and he pursues him to give him poverty; and he does not depart from the world until he has come to need other people. And of him it is written, “He wanders abroad for bread: where is it?” (Job 15, 23). “He wanders” — he goes about moving, and is exiled from place to place — “for bread: where is it?” And there is none who takes heed of him; this is what is written, “where?” Who will have compassion on him? For he will not find. (And in the first composition: 'The Faithful Shepherd said: Whoever slights'.)
Segment 3
Ra'aya Meheimna. And in the first composition the Faithful Shepherd said: Whoever slights the crumbs of bread, and throws them in a place where it is not fitting — how much more so he who slights the crumbs of the brain, which are drops of seed, and throws them on the ground, of which it is said, “for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth” (Gen. 6, 12); or throws them into a niddah, or into a daughter of a strange god, or into a handmaid, or into a harlot. And how much more so, and how much more so, he who slights the crumbs of the bread of the Torah, which are the tips of the letters and the crowns of the letters, of which it is said, “Whoever makes use of the crown passes away.”
