Section 86 of 129 in Pinchas — 3 segments

Segment 1

The dust of Jacob is to plead merit for the prayer, with many camps of sins (a variant reads: of merits), which are bands (a variant reads: hosts) and camps, which gather with him to plead merit for it. And the dust of the grade of Samael rises with many camps of sins, to plead guilt against it. And this is the evening prayer, which is called Jacob's ladder, on which “behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it” (Gen. 28, 12). These raise up sins, and merits go down beneath them; and those raise up merits, and sins go down beneath them. And they cast them down in many battles.

Segment 2

For they are masters of shields in the war of Torah, until the battle is heard by the great mountains, who are Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, as it is written, “Hear, O mountains, the Lord's controversy” (Micah 6, 2) — a controversy of prayer, a controversy of Torah. And this battle of the evening prayer lasts until the rising of the dawn; for Rabban Gamaliel explained it: until the rising of the dawn. For the evening prayer — its time is the whole night, but the sages made a fence until midnight.

Segment 3

And therefore, “And a man wrestled with him until the rising of the dawn (shachar).” What is shachar? The evening prayer, whose measure is until the morning of Abraham, which is four hours: “And Abraham got up early in the morning” (Gen. 22, 3). At the head of the first hour, at the end of the dawn, (a variant adds: which is) the netzach of Jacob, where “For the Leader (lamnatze'ach), upon the hind of the dawn (ayyelet ha-shachar)” (Ps. 22, 1): to take vengeance on Samael, who touched the left thigh of Jacob, which is hod, of which it is said, “He has made me desolate and faint (davah) all the day” (Lam. 1, 13): davah is hod. From the side of hod, in the fifth millennium, the Temple remained waste and dry.
