Segment 1
And further, it has been said in the first composition: “Michtam of David” (Ps. 60, 1) — a sign that was shown to David when he sent Joab to Aram-naharaim and to Aram-zobah, to wage war on them. The Faithful Shepherd said: Shushan Eduth — this is the testimony of the Shekinah, for she is Shushan Eduth: she is the testimony that stands over us and testifies of us before the King, and holy supernal grades are with her, and a holy help for praise. The Faithful Shepherd said: Shushan Eduth — for these are witnesses concerning Israel, who are limbs, and she is the soul over them. It is the help of Heaven, of which it is said, “then hear in heaven” (I Kings 8, 32). She is the holy help (a variant adds: and on her it depends), of which it is said: There is a teaching that supports you.
Segment 2
“Firm (eitan) is your dwelling place, and set your nest in the rock” (Num. 24, 21). Eitan: tanya (a teacher). There is the nest of the supernal eagle, and she is the Shekinah; and of her it is said, “As an eagle that stirs up his nest, hovers over his young” (Deut. 32, 11) — these are those who learn halachoth and mishnayot. And every utterance that goes forth from the mouth of that teacher, which he brings forth — whether for the name of the Tetragrammaton, whether in the Torah, whether in prayer, whether in blessing, whether in each and every precept — what is written of it? “He spreads abroad his wings”: that eagle which is the utterance, in which is the Tetragrammaton.
Segment 3
“Takes them, bears them on his pinions.” What is “on his pinions”? On that limb of a man (a variant reads: on that eagle) in which is the commandment of the Tetragrammaton; it is called the limb of the Shekinah. And therefore, “bears them on his pinions.” “Bears them”: as in “The Lord lift up His countenance upon you” (Num. 6, 25).
