Segment 1א׳

פָּתַח רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וְאָמַר, (דברים ו׳:ד׳) שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְיָ אֶחָד. ע' רַבְרְבָא, ד' אוּף הָכִי. וְסִימָנָא דָּא עֵד. הַיְינוּ דִּכְתִּיב, (שמואל א י״ב:ה׳) עֵד יְיָ בָּכֶם. אִשְׁתַּאֲרוּן אַתְוָון ש"מ, מ' פְּתוּחָה. מַאי טַעְמָא לָא סְתִימָא, בְּגִין דְּם' סְתִימָא, מַלְכָּא (ס"א עלמא) עִלָּאָה. מ' פְּתִיחָא, מַלְכָּא (ס"א עלמא) תַּתָּאָה. אַתְוָון אַחֲרָנִין, אִשְׁתָּאֲרוּ א"ח, (משלי כ״ה:ב׳) כְּבוֹד אֱלֹהִים הַסְתֵּר דָּבָר כְּתִיב.

R. Simeon opened and said: “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Deut. 6, 4). The Ayin is large, and the Daleth likewise. And the sign of this is ed (witness); this is what is written, “The Lord is witness against you” (I Sam. 12, 5). There remain the letters Shin-Mem, with an open Mem. Why is it not closed? Because the closed Mem is the supernal King (a variant reads: world); the open Mem, the lower King (a variant reads: world). The other letters that remain are Aleph-Heth: “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing” (Prov. 25, 2), it is written.

Segment 2ב׳

אַשְׁכַּחְנָא בְּסִפְרָא דְּרַב הַמְנוּנָא סָבָא, כָּל מַאן דִּמְיַיחֵד יִחוּדָא דָּא בְּכָל יוֹמָא, חֶדְוָה זְמִינָא לֵיהּ מִלְּעֵילָּא, מֵרָזָא דְּאַתְוָון אִלֵּין, ש"מ מֵהַאי סִטְרָא. א"ח, מֵהַאי סִטְרָא. וּמְצָרֵף אַתְוָון, לְמַפְרֵעַ (שדי) שַׁרֵי, וּבְמֵישָׁר (חיים) סִיֵּים. וְסִימָן אֶשְׂמַח. דִּכְתִּיב, (תהילים ק״ד:ל״ד) אָנֹכִי אֶשְׂמַח בַּיְיָ. מַמָּשׁ. דָּא יִחוּדָא קַדִישָׁא. וְשַׁפִּיר אִיהוּ. וְהָכִי הוּא בְּסִפְרָא דְּחֲנוֹךְ, דְּאָמַר כִּי הַאי גַּוְונָא, דְּמַאן דִּמְיַיחֵד יִחוּדָא דָּא בְּכָל יוֹמָא, חֶדְוָה זְמִינָא לֵיהּ מִלְעֵילָּא.

I have found in the book of Rab Hamnuna the Elder: whoever unifies this unity every day, joy is prepared for him from above, from the mystery of these letters — Shin-Mem from this side, Aleph-Heth from that side. And he combines the letters: in reverse (a variant reads: Shaddai) it begins, and in straight order (a variant reads: life) it ends. And the sign is esmach (I will rejoice), as it is written, “I will rejoice in the Lord” (Ps. 104, 34). Precisely. This is the holy unity, and it is fine. And so it is in the Book of Enoch, which says likewise, that whoever unifies this unity every day, joy is prepared for him from above.

תּוּ אִית בֵּיהּ ש"מ, דְּאִתְכְּלִיל מִן ע' רַבְרְבָא. אִלֵּין שִׁבְעִין שְׁמָהָן בְּרָזָא דַּאֲבָהָן קַדִישִׁין, וְדָא הוּא שְׁמַע: שֵׁם ע'. יִשְׂרָאֵל, יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ, יְיָ, אִלֵּין אַרְבַּע בָּתֵּי דִּתְפִלִּין, דְּאָחִיד לוֹן א"ח. הַהוּא דְּאָמַר (שיר השירים ה׳:ב׳) פִּתְחִי לִי אֲחוֹתִי רַעְיָתִי. ד': דָּא קֶשֶׁר שֶׁל תְּפִלִין, דְּהִיא אֲחִידַת בְּהוּ. רָזָא לְחַכִּימִין אִתְמְסַר, דְּלָא לְגַלָּאָה. שָׁתִיק רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן. בָּכָה וְחַיִיךְ, אָמַר, אֵימָּא, דְּהָא וַדַּאי רַעֲוָא אִשְׁתְּכַח, וְלֵית כְּדָרָא דָּא עַד דְּיֵיתֵי מַלְכָּא מְשִׁיחָא, דִּיְהֵא רְשׁוּ לוֹן לְגַלָּאָה.

Further, there is in it Shin-Mem, which is comprised with the large Ayin: these are the seventy names in the mystery of the holy patriarchs. And this is shema: shem (name), Ayin. Israel, the Lord, our God, the Lord — these are the four compartments of the phylacteries, which Aleph-Heth holds together: he who said, “Open to me, my sister (achoti), my love” (S. S. 5, 2). Daleth: this is the knot of the phylacteries, which is held by them. It is a mystery handed down to the wise, not to be revealed. R. Simeon was silent. He wept and he laughed. He said: I will say it; for surely there is goodwill here, and there will be no generation like this one until the King Messiah comes, when they will have permission to reveal it.
