Segment 1
With teruah and tekiah and shevarim, all is sweetened, one with the other. And all that the liver takes, it brings near to the heart, which is king, for nourishment (a variant reads: for judgement). And that heart — it is not its way, nor its desire, to be in the turbidity of the deeds of its people; rather, it takes all the clearness, and all the brightness, and all the merits, and all the good deeds. And all that turbidity and filth and grime, which are the evil deeds (a variant omits this) (a variant adds: that liver throws them to the rest of the idolatrous nations), it leaves to the liver, of which it is said, “Esau … a hairy man” (Gen. 27, 11); and all its veins are the rest of the idolatrous nations. This is what is written: “And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities” (Lev. 16, 22). What is avonotam (their iniquities)? Avonot tam — the iniquities of the perfect one, of whom it is said, “And Jacob was a perfect man” (Gen. 25, 27). And the sins of the Column (a variant reads: of his people) are the veins and the pulses of the heart.
Segment 2
And because of this, boils and leprosy and scab, in all those limbs, are found to come from the liver, from those grimes that remained in it. From the heart comes all health to all the limbs. For so it is: since the heart takes all the purity and clearness and brightness, the liver takes all that is found and left over of the grime and filth, and throws it to all the other members, which are the other idolatrous nations, against their will. And from the refuse of the refuse of the liver the spleen takes, of which it is said, “Let there be lights (me'orot)” (Gen. 1, 14) — “The curse (me'erat) of the Lord is in the house of the wicked” (Prov. 3, 33).
