Segment 1
Ra'aya Meheimna. Further he said in the first composition — the Faithful Shepherd said: And behold, the Rabbis have explained concerning it: the spleen laughs. And it is “the laughter of the fool” (Eccl. 7, 6). And because of this the sages of the Mishnah have explained: Woe to him at whom the hour laughs. And Koheleth said, “Vexation is better than laughter” (Eccl. 7, 3). Better is the vexation of the liver, which is the gall, the lash of the Holy One, blessed be He — a lash with which to smite the righteous in this world with evil sicknesses, with afflictions — than the laughter with which the spleen laughs at them, in the grime of this world, where the hour laughs at them in wealth. And further: the venom of the spleen is a crawler in the dust, and it is stronger than the venom of the gall.
Segment 2
And because the mixed multitude are the leaven in the dough, while the nations of the world are like chaff, the mixed multitude hold Israel back in exile more than the idolatrous nations do. As the Rabbis have explained: Who holds back? The leaven in the dough holds back. For they cleave to Israel as leaven in the dough. But the idolatrous nations are nothing but “like the chaff which the wind drives away” (Ps. 1, 4).
