Segment 1א׳

כְּתִיב (ויקרא ט׳:י׳) הַיּוֹתֶרֶת מִן הַכָּבֵד. וּכְתִיב (ויקרא ג׳:ד׳) וְאֶת הַיּוֹתֶרֶת עַל הַכָּבֵד. (בתר דעבידת ניאופא, אסתליק עליה.) יוֹתֶרֶת מִן הַכָּבֵד, דָּא אֵשֶׁת זְנוּנִים, דְּאַזְלָא וְנָפְקָא מִן הַכָּבֵד, לְאַסְטָאָה בְּנֵי עָלְמָא, וּלְאַסְטְנָא עָלַיְיהוּ. וְשַׁבְקַת לִדְכוּרָא, לְמֶעְבַּד זְנוּנִים. וּבְגִין דָּא הַיּוֹתֶרֶת מִן הַכָּבֵד, יוֹתֶרֶת עַל הַכָּבֵד. בָּתַר דְּעַבְדַת נִיאוּפָא, אִסְתָּלָקַת עָלֵיהּ. מֵצַח אִשָּׁה זוֹנָה. אִתְגַּבְּרַת עַל בַּעְלָהּ דְּאִיהוּ כָּבֵד, בְּכַעַס דְּמָרָה, אֵשֶׁת מְדָנִים, וָכַעַס, דְּשַׁלְטָא אִיהִי עַל דְּכוּרָא דִּילָהּ. מֵצַח אִשָּׁה זוֹנָה שַׁלְטָא עַל הַכָּבֵד, אֵשֶׁת מְדָנִים וָכַעַס.

It is written, “the lobe of the liver” (Lev. 9, 10), and it is written, “and the lobe above the liver” (Lev. 3, 4). (a variant adds: After she has committed adultery, she rises above it.) “The lobe of the liver” — this is the wife of harlotry, who goes and comes out from the liver to lead the people of the world astray and to act as adversary against them, and leaves her male, to commit harlotry. And for this reason “the lobe of the liver” is “the lobe above the liver”: after she has committed adultery, she rises above it. “A harlot's forehead”: she prevails over her husband, who is the liver, with the vexation of the gall — “a woman of contentions and vexation” — for she rules over her own male. “A harlot's forehead” rules over the liver: “a woman of contentions and vexation.”

יוֹתֶרֶת מִן הַכָּבֵד, מִן הַכָּבֵד נָפְקָא לְאַבְאָשָׁא לְכָל עָלְמָא, וּלְמֶעְבַּד נִיאוּפִין עִם כֹּלָּא. לְבָתַר אִיהִי סַלְּקָא לְגַבֵּי דְּכוֹרָא, מֶצַח אִשָּׁה זוֹנָה, בְּעַזּוּתָא דְּאַנְפִּין, וּכְדֵין אִיהִי עַל הַכָּבֵד. וְעוֹד, יוֹתֶרֶת מִן הַכָּבֵד אִתְקְרִיאַת מִסִּטְרָא אַחֲרָא, בָּתַר דְּנַפְקַת לְנַאֲפָא עִם כֹּלָּא, יְהִיבַת שִׁיּוּרִין לְבַעְלָהּ, וְהַאי אִיהִי יוֹתֶרֶת מִן הַכָּבֵד.

“The lobe of the liver”: from the liver she goes out to do harm to the whole world, and to commit adulteries with all. Afterwards she goes up to the male — “a harlot's forehead,” with brazenness of face — and then she is “above the liver.” And further, from the other side she is called “the lobe of the liver”: after she has gone out to commit adultery with all, she gives the leftovers to her husband; and this is she, “the lobe of the liver.”

מִגּוֹ כָּבֵד, וְיוֹתֶרֶת דִּילָהּ, נַפְקַת מָרָה, וְאִיהִי חַרְבָּא דְּמַלְאָךְ הַמָּוְת, דְּנַפְקוּ מִנָּהּ טִפִּין מְרִירָן לְקַטְלָא בְּנֵי נָשָׁא. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (משלי ה׳:ד׳) וְאַחֲרִיתָהּ מָרָה כַלַּעֲנָה. וְאִיהִי תַּלְיָא בַּכָּבֵד, כָּל מַרְעִין וּמוֹתָא בֵּיהּ תַּלְיָין. וְהַהוּא יוֹמָא דְרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה (משטנא) מְשַׁטְּטָא בְּעָלְמָא, לְמִכְנַשׁ כָּל חוֹבֵי עָלְמָא וּכְדֵין כָּל אֵבָרִין דְּאִינּוּן יִשְׂרָאֵל, אִינּוּן בְּעָאקוּ, דְּאִינּוּן אֵבָרֵי דְּמַטְרוֹנִיתָא, (משלי כ׳:כ״ז) נֵר יְיָ נִשְׁמַת אָדָם, שְׁכִינְתָּא קַדִּישָׁא. וּכְדֵין כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּעָאקוּ, וְנַטְלֵי שׁוֹפָר לְאַתְּעָרָא בֵּיהּ הַהוּא תְּקִיעָה וּשְׁבָרִים וּתְרוּעָה.

From within the liver and its lobe comes out the gall; and it is the sword of the angel of death, from which bitter drops come out to kill human beings. That is what is written: “But her end is bitter as wormwood” (Prov. 5, 4). And it hangs on the liver; all sicknesses and death hang on it. And on that day of the New Year she roams (a variant reads: acts as adversary) through the world, to gather all the sins of the world. And then all the limbs, which are Israel, are in distress, for they are the limbs of the Matrona — “The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord” (Prov. 20, 27) — the holy Shekinah. And then all Israel are in distress, and they take up the shofar, to arouse with it that tekiah and shevarim and teruah.

רעיא מהימנא אָמַר רַעְיָא מְהֵימָנָא, ודַּאי בָּתַר דְּאֵבָרִים וְעַרְקִין דְּלִבָּא, דְּדַמְיָין לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, אִינּוּן בְּעָאקוּ. צְרִיכִין לְאַתְּעָרָא בְּקָנֶה, דְּאִיהוּ שׁוֹפָר. וְדָא קָנֶה דְּרֵיאָה. בָּתַר דְּכַנְפֵי רֵיאָה לָא יַכְלִין לְשַׁכְּכָא רוּגְזָא דְּמָרָה דְּאִתְגַּבַּרְתּ עַל עַרְקִין דְּלִבָּא, וְעַל כָּל עַרְקִין דְּאֵבָרִים דְּגוּפָא. הַהוּא רוּחָא דְּנָשִׁיב בְּהוֹן, סָלִיק בְּקָנֶה, דְּאִיהוּ שׁוֹפָר, עָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי. דְּהָכִי אוֹקְמוּהָ, וְשֶׁט, דּוֹמֶה לְעָלְמָא דֵּין, דְּבֵיהּ אֲכִילָה וּשְׁתִיָּה. קָנֶה, דּוֹמֶה לְעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי, דְּלֵית בֵּיהּ אֲכִילָה וּשְׁתִיָּה.

Ra'aya Meheimna. The Faithful Shepherd said: Assuredly, after the limbs and the veins of the heart, which resemble Israel, are in distress, they need to arouse with the pipe (kaneh), which is the shofar; and this is the pipe of the lung. After the wings of the lung cannot allay the wrath of the gall, which has prevailed over the veins of the heart and over all the veins of the limbs of the body, that breath which blows in them rises in the pipe, which is the shofar — the world to come. For so it has been explained: the gullet (veshet) resembles this world, in which there is eating and drinking; the pipe resembles the world to come, in which there is no eating and drinking.

וּלְבָתַר דְּשָׁט ו' מִן וְשֶׁט, בְּרִבּוּי אֲכִילָה דְּגֶזֶל אִתְאֲרָךְ וְאִתְעָבִיד שָׂטָן. וּמַאן גָּרִים דָּא. (במדבר י״א:ח׳) שָׁטוּ הָעָם וְלָקְטוּ, שָׁטוּתָא דִּלְהוֹן דְּאִתְעָרְבוּ בְּעֵרֶב רַב שַׁטְיָין, דְּתַאֲוָה דִּלְהוֹן אֲכִילָה וּשְׁתִיָּה דְּגֶזֶל וְחָמָס, (תהילים י״ב:ו׳) דְּשׁוֹד עֲנִיִּים וְאֶנְקַת אֶבְיוֹנִים. בְּנוּן כְּפוּפָה שַׁטְיָין, דְּאַכְלִין בְּלָא טְחִינָה. מַה כְּתִיב בְּהוּ, (במדבר י״א:ל״ג) הַבָּשָׂר עוֹדֶנּוּ בֵּין שִׁינֵּיהֶם טֶרֶם יִכָּרֵת וְאַף יְיָ חָרָה בָעָם. אִתְפְּשַׁט ו' דְּשָׁטוּ, אִיהוּ דְּרוּחֵיהּ כָּפוּף, וְאִיהוּ נ'. וְדָא גָּרַם דְּאִתְפְּשַׁט שָׂטָן בַּאֲכִילָה וּשְׁתִיָּה, וְאִתְגְּבָּר עַל כָּל אֵבָרִין וְעַרְקִין בְּשס"ה לֹא תַּעֲשֶׂה. כְּחוּשְׁבָּן הַשָּׂטָ"ן חָסֵר חַד, דָּא יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים, דְּלֵית בֵּיהּ אֲכִילָה וּשְׁתִיָּה.

And after the Vau strays (shat) from veshet, through much eating of robbery it lengthens and becomes Satan. And who causes this? “The people went about (shatu) and gathered it” (Num. 11, 8) — their folly (shetuta), for they were mingled with the mixed multitude, fools (shatyin), whose desire is the eating and drinking of robbery and violence — “for the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy” (Ps. 12, 6). With a bent Nun, shatyin, who eat without grinding. What is written of them? “While the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people” (Num. 11, 33). The Vau of shatu spread out — it is he whose spirit is bent — and it is Nun. And this caused Satan to spread out in eating and drinking, and to prevail over all the limbs and veins, in the three hundred and sixty-five negative commandments — according to the numerical value of ha-satan, lacking one: this is the Day of Atonement, in which there is no eating and drinking.
