Segment 1

On that day of New Year seventy seats are set for hearing the judgement of the world, some inclining to the right to acquit and some to the left to condemn.

Segment 2

And therefore they must specify the sins of each and every limb, and all that one has done, in detail. That is what is written: “I acknowledged my sin to You,” etc. (Ps. 32); afterwards, “and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.” From where do we know it? From Moses, as it is written, “Oh, this people have sinned,” etc. (Ex. 32). Of Israel it is written, “We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord” (I Sam. 12). For should you say that this holds for an individual but not for a congregation — here this verse is written. And should you say that this holds for a congregation but not for their emissary — here it is written, “And Moses returned to the Lord,” etc. (Ex. 32), and it is written, “and have made themselves,” etc. (Ex. 32). What is the reason? He who specifies his sin, the court holds itself apart from him; for a man is his own kin, and is not condemned on his own mouth.

Segment 3

And further, he leaves the accuser no room to argue sin, blemish, against him. For a man should forestall and speak, and not give place to another to speak. Then the Holy One, blessed be He, forgives him, as it is written, “but whoever confesses and forsakes them shall obtain mercy” (Prov. 28, 13).
