Segment 1
R. Simeon said: Let him who opened the door speak. R. Eleazar said: As we have learnt, whoever says “A Psalm of praise; of David” three times every day is a son of the world to come; and the reason has been stated. If it is for the sake of the sustenance and food of all the worlds, there are two times every day, morning and evening, as it is written, “When the Lord gives you in the evening flesh to eat,” etc. (Ex. 15) — why three times every day? Rather: two for the food of human beings and of the whole world, and one to give strength to that place of the opening of His hands.
Segment 2
And these two foods differ one from the other; and all three foods are written here: “And You give them their food in due season” (Ps. 145, 15) — this is the food of the rich, to whom He gives abundant food in its season; that is one. Two, as it is written, “and satisfy every living thing with favour (ratzon)” — this is the food of the poor, who are satisfied from favour, and not from abundance of food. Three, as it is written, “You open Your hand” — this is strength to that place; and in the opening of His hands favour goes forth and satisfies all.
Segment 3
Further, thus I have learnt: that it is only twice, for the sake of food and sustenance every day, for these are an obligation upon a man. And if he says it more, it is not for the sake of obligation, but for the sake of praise, among the praises of the songs of King David. (a variant reads: that the hands of the Holy One, blessed be He, go forth and He blesses, to satisfy from favour; and therefore it is no obligation save twice a day, and it is praise to the Holy One, blessed be He, to give Him the songs of King David.) What is the reason? Because it is not fitting to ask for sustenance except after prayer and the sustenance of one's Master. The King eats first, and afterwards His servants eat.
