Segment 1
Above, in the tree of life, there are no shells: “For none might enter within the king's gate clothed with sackcloth” (Esther 4, 2). Below there are shells in Metatron, who is in the image of the Central Column. For when the Holy One, blessed be He, is outside His kingdom, He is covered with the wings and faces of His servant. This is what is written, “And He rode upon a cherub, and did fly” (II Sam. 22, 11).
Segment 2
And these are the shells that surround the four Hayyoth of Metatron. Tohu: “and, behold, a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks; the Lord was not in the wind” (I Kings 19, 11). Bohu: “and after the wind an earthquake; the Lord was not in the earthquake.” These are two shells, green and white, like the shells of the nut: the first, tohu, the green line; the second, bohu, the moist stones — a hard shell, like a moist stone. Corresponding to these two shells: the chaff and the straw of the wheat.
Segment 3
The third shell is thin, corresponding to the bran of the wheat; for here it cleaves to the wheat and cannot be separated from there until it is ground in the millstones, which correspond to the molars of a man's mouth, with which he must grind the words of the Torah until they are like flour of pure fine flour. And with the sieve (nafah), which is the lip (safah), the refuse, which is the bran (a variant adds: of the Torah), is sifted out, until the halachah is found to be pure fine flour. At that time the heart and the brain take it, and all the limbs of the body through which the soul spreads; and the soul is nourished by it, just as the body is nourished by the things of the world: “God has made the one as well as the other” (Eccl. 7, 14) — the bread of the body and the bread of the Torah. This is what is written, “Come, eat of my bread” (Prov. 9, 5).
