Zohar, Pinchas 43
Section 43 of 129 in Pinchas — 6 segments
Segment 1
Ra'aya Meheimna. Rather, pegi'ah is appeasement. For when the bridegroom comes to the bride, there is no way for the bridegroom to unite with the bride except through appeasement, and afterwards he makes his lodging (linah) with her. And this is (a variant adds: and he tarried there) “because the sun was set.”
Segment 2
The Faithful Shepherd said: If so, what is “because the sun was set”? For the way of homily has explained it as an expression of extinguishing, and this is “because the sun was set.” Rather, from here we learn: whoever unites with his wife must put out the lamp at night; and by day it is not the way of the Rabbis to have marital relations, but only at night, the way of modesty. And therefore, when is the lodging made? “Because the sun was set” — when the sun has withdrawn from the world.
Segment 3
And therefore, so too one must be concealed from the sun, and so too one must be concealed from these angels, which are of the good inclination, on the right, in many camps, and of the evil inclination, which goes to the left, in many camps. And therefore, after the morning came, he said, “when he saw them.” And from the side of Jacob, who was a perfect man, there were with him only the hosts of the King and the Matrona. And therefore, “he called the name of that place Mahanaim.” Of those angels of the day it is written, “when he saw them: This is God's camp”; and when the angels of the night came, who gathered with him to guard him, he said, “and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.”
