Section 42 of 129 in Pinchas — 3 segments
Segment 1
He opened and said: “And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him” (Gen. 32, 2). What is vayifge'u bo (met him)? Rather, there is a pegi'ah (meeting) for good, and there is a pegi'ah for evil, and there is a pegi'ah for prayer. Rather, at the time when he was going to Haran, what is written? “And he lighted upon (vayifga) the place” (Gen. 28, 11) — it was the evening prayer that he prayed in that place, as you say, “Behold, there is a place with Me” (Ex. 33, 21). And the evening prayer is seen in that place.
Segment 2
Further, “And he lighted upon the place” — these are words of appeasement. For the holy sun came to the moon, the husband to the wife. From here we learn that it is not fitting for the husband to come to the wife unless it be with words of appeasement, to appease her; for it is written, “And he lighted upon the place,” and afterwards, “and tarried there.” When Jacob was coming from Haran, what is written? “And they met him” — she sent them to appease him, that he should come to her.
Segment 3
“And Jacob said when he saw them.” What is “when he saw them”? These were angels of the day and angels of the night, and they had been hidden from him, and afterwards they were revealed to him. And therefore, of “when he saw them” it is written, “This is God's camp.” From here we learn that there were these of the day and those of the night: of those of the night it is written, “God's camp” (machaneh Elohim), and of those of the day it is written, “This” (zeh). And therefore, “he called the name of that place Mahanaim” — two camps. And now I see holy camps here. Happy is my way, that I have come here.
