Section 41 of 129 in Pinchas — 4 segments

Segment 1

He opened and said: “Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed faithfulness” (Ps. 37, 3). “Trust in the Lord” — as is fitting. “And do good” — the setting right of the holy covenant: that you should set it right and guard it as is fitting. And if you do this, you shall be here in the land, and that faithfulness above shall be fed from you and sustained from you.

Segment 2

And further (a variant reads: sets it right and guards it. “Dwell in the land” — the land, the supernal holy land, the land of the living: in that land you shall dwell, in that good. “And feed faithfulness” — that faithfulness above shall be fed and sustained from it through you. And if you do this), “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the petitions of your heart.” All this is set right through the setting right of the covenant. Once the covenant is set right, all is set right. Phineas, because he was zealous for this covenant, merited everything. And not only this, but he shielded all Israel, and in him was fulfilled “Delight yourself in the Lord.” For he ascended and was bound above (a variant adds: and shone) in the primordial light which the Holy One, blessed be He, created and hid away — in that light from which Abraham had delight, and to which Aaron the priest was bound.

Segment 3

After he ascended to the high priesthood, the killing of Zimri is not mentioned of him; and it was not fitting, so that he should not be held at all in the branches of the other side, and it is not seemly to mention it of him. For whoever kills has branches of the other side in him. And Phineas is held in the right, and has no portion at all in the other side; and therefore it is not mentioned here. What appears as praise is a disgrace to him, and a descent from the supernal grade to which he held. And therefore it is written, “that was slain, who was slain,” without specification, and “And the name of the woman that was slain,” and it is not mentioned by whose hand.
