Section 18 of 129 in Pinchas — 5 segments
Segment 1
Another interpretation: “in his Makers” — because a man is made in partnership: man and woman, and the Holy One, blessed be He. And upon this mystery it is written, “Let us make man” (Gen. 1) — in partnership. For we have learnt: the Holy One, blessed be He, made three craftsmen, to bring forth the world from them, and these are they: heaven, and earth, and water. And each one served one day, and they returned as at first.
Segment 2
On the first day, heaven brought forth its craft, as it is written, “And God said: Let there be light. And there was light” (Gen. 1, 3). On the second day, the waters brought forth craft for the work, as it is written, “And God said: Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,” etc. Half the waters went up above, and half the waters remained below; and were it not that the waters were thus divided, the world would not have stood. On the third day, the earth worked and brought forth as it was commanded, as it is written, “And God said: Let the earth put forth grass, herb,” and it is written, “And the earth brought forth grass,” etc.
Segment 3
Up to here, each craftsman of these three brought forth its craft, and they did what they were commanded. Three other days remained. On the fourth day the first craftsman was commanded to do its craft, as it is written, “And God said: Let there be lights,” etc. — and that is heaven. On the fifth day the waters, which are another craftsman, brought forth, as it is written, “And God said: Let the waters swarm,” etc. On the sixth day the earth did its craft, as it is written, “And God said: Let the earth bring forth the living creature,” etc.
