Section 17 of 129 in Pinchas — 3 segments

Segment 1

Rise, R. Abba, to renew words of the Torah which you said in the first composition. R. Abba opened and said: “Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth,” etc. (Isa. 42, 10). How beloved are Israel before the Holy One, blessed be He! For their joy and their praise are nothing save (a variant reads: to make the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekinah partners in that which is thus, etc.) in Him. For so it is, as we have learnt: every joy of Israel in which they do not make the Holy One, blessed be He, (a variant adds: and His Shekinah) a partner is no joy. And Samael and all his company are ready to accuse that joy, (a variant reads: and it turns back) and it remains in sorrow and weeping, and the Holy One, blessed be He, has no share in that sorrow.

Segment 2

But he who makes the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekinah partners in his joy — if an accuser comes to accuse in that joy, the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekinah share in that sorrow. What is written of Him? “In all their affliction He was afflicted” (Isa. 63). And by what? Because “I will be with him in trouble” (Ps. 91, 15).

Segment 3

And from where do we know that Israel must make the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekinah partners in their joy? (a variant adds: for it is no joy save in His partnership with these.) As it is written, “Let Israel rejoice in his Makers (be'osav)” (Ibid. 149). That joy of Israel is nothing save “in his Makers.” Be'osav — it should have said be'oso (his Maker)! Rather, these are the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekinah, and his father and his mother; for although they have died, the Holy One, blessed be He, removes them from the Garden of Eden and brings them with Him to that joy, to take a portion of joy with the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekinah. As you say, “He that made him (ha'oso) can bring near His sword” (Job 40, 19).
