Section 124 of 129 in Pinchas — 12 segments

Segment 1

And one must know that He is called wise in all kinds of wisdom; and understanding in all kinds of understanding; and pious in all kinds of kindness; and mighty in all kinds of might; and counsellor in all kinds of counsel; and righteous in all kinds of righteousness; and king in all kinds of kingship — up to En Sof, up to (a variant reads: keter) En Cheker. And in all these grades, in one He is called merciful, and in one He is called judge; and so in many grades, up to En Sof. If so, there is change between merciful and judge! Rather, before He created the world, He was called by all these grades on account of the creatures that were destined to be created. For were it not for the creatures of the world, why would He be called merciful, judge? Rather, on account of the creatures that were to be.

Segment 2

And therefore all the names are His appellations, on account of His works. In the same way, He created the soul in His likeness, which is called by the name of its actions in each and every limb of the body, which is called the small world. Just as the Lord of the world conducts Himself with all creatures, and with every generation, according to its deeds, so the soul, according to the deeds of each and every limb. That limb with which one performs a precept — the soul is called, toward it, compassion and lovingkindness, grace and mercy. And in that limb with which one commits a transgression, the soul is called, toward it, judgement and wrath and anger. But outside the body, toward whom would there be compassion, or cruelty?

Segment 3

So too the Lord of the world: before He created the world and created His creatures, toward whom would He be called merciful and gracious, or judge? Rather, all His names are appellations, and He is not called by them except on account of the creatures of the world. And therefore, when the men of the generation are good, He is called toward them the Tetragrammaton, in the attribute of mercy; and when the men of the generation are wicked, He is called Adonai, in the attribute of judgement — to every generation and to every man according to his measure. But not that He has a measure, or a known name.
