Segment 1א׳

(במדבר כ״ט:א׳) וּבֶעָשׂוֹר לַחוֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי, דְּאִיהוּ תִּשְׁרֵי. מִקְרָא קֹדֶשׁ יִהְיֶה לָכֶם, דָּא יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים. דְּאִיהוּ עֲשִׂירִי י', כָּלִיל מֵעֲשֶׂרֶת יְמֵי תְּשׁוּבָה. וְתַקִּינוּ בֵּיהּ ה' צְלוֹתִין, לְחַבְּרָא לָּהּ עִם ה'. (מאי מקרא קדש. יהיה לכם דא יום הכפורים דאיהי עשירי י', כליל מעשרת ימי תשובה. ותקינו ביה ה' צלותין, לחברא עם ה') מַאי מִקְרָא קֹדֶשׁ. לְאַפְרְשָׁא לֵיהּ מִשְּׁאַר יוֹמִין, דְּאִית בְּהוּ פּוּלְחָנָא דְּחוֹל. וּבְגִין דָּא, כָּל מְלֶאכֶת עֲבוֹדָה לֹא תַעֲשׂוּ.

“And on the tenth day of the seventh month” (Num. 29, 1) — which is Tishri. “A holy convocation shall it be to you”: this is the Day of Atonement, which is the tenth, Yod, comprising the ten days of repentance. And they instituted in it five prayers, to join her with He. (a variant reads: What is mikra kodesh? “It shall be to you”: this is the Day of Atonement, which is the tenth, Yod, comprising the ten days of repentance; and they instituted in it five prayers, to join with He.) What is mikra kodesh? To separate it from the other days, in which there is profane service. And therefore, “you shall do no manner of servile work.”

Segment 2ב׳

דְּיוֹמִין דְּאִית בְּהוֹן מְלֶאכֶת חוֹל, אִינּוּן מִסִּטְרָא דְּעֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע. דְּאִתְהַפָּךְ מִמַּטֶּה לְנָחָשׁ, וּמִנָחָשׁ לְמַטֶּה. לְכָל חַד כְּפוּם עוֹבָדוֹי, וְדָא מְטַטְרוֹן מַטֶּה, נָחָשׁ, סָמָאֵל. אֲבָל בְּהַאי יוֹמָא דְּאִיהוּ יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים דְּאִתְקְרֵי קֹדֶשׁ, שַׁלְטָא אִילָנָא דְּחַיֵּי, דְּלָא אִשְׁתְּתַּף עִמֵּיהּ שָׂטָן וּפֶגַע רָע. וּמִסִּטְרֵיהּ (תהילים ה׳:ה׳) לֹא יְגוּרְךָ רָע. וּבְגִין דָּא, בֵּיהּ נַיְיחִין עַבְדִּין בְּאִילָנָא דְּחַיֵּי, (נ"א ואשתתפן גביה) וּבֵיהּ נַפְקָן לְחֵירוּת, בֵּיהּ נַפְקֵי מִשֻׁלְשְׁלֵיהוֹן.

For the days in which there is profane labour are from the side of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which turns from a rod into a serpent, and from a serpent into a rod — to each one according to his deeds. And this is Metatron, the rod; the serpent, Samael. But on this day, which is the Day of Atonement, which is called holy, the tree of life rules, with which neither Satan nor evil occurrence has a share; and from its side, “evil shall not sojourn with You” (Ps. 5, 5). And therefore on it the servants rest in the tree of life (a variant adds: and are joined with it), and on it they go out to freedom; on it they go out of their chains.

אִינּוּן דְּאִית עָלַיְיהוּ גְּזַר דִּין, בְּנֶדֶר וּבִשְׁבוּעָה, וּבְגִין דָּא תַּקִּינוּ לְמֵימַר בֵּיהּ, כָּל נִדְרֵי וְאֵיסָרֵי וְכוּ', כּוּלְהוֹן יְהוֹן שְׁבִיתִין וּשְׁבִיקִין לָא שְׁרִירִין וְלָא קַיָּימִין. וּבְגִין דָּא נֵדֶר דַּיְדוָֹ"ד, דְּאִיהוּ תִּפְאֶרֶת. וּשְׁבוּעָה דַּאֲדֹנָי, דְּאִיהוּ מַלְכוּת. דְּעַבְדּוּ עַל גָּלוּתָא דִּלְהוֹן, בְּחָכְמָה וּבִינָה יְהוֹן שְׁבִיקִין וּשְׁבִיתִין לָא שְׁרִירִן וְלָא קַיָּימִין, (במדבר ט״ו:כ״ו) וְנִסְלַח לְכָל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל. דְּחֶסֶד אִיהוּ מַיִם. גְּבוּרָה אֵשׁ. תִּפְאֶרֶת אַוִּיר. וּבְגִין דָּא אוּקְמוּהָ מָארֵי מַתְנִיתִין, הֵתֶּר נְדָרִים פּוֹרְחִים בַּאֲוִיר.

Those upon whom there is a decree of judgement, by vow and by oath — and therefore they ordained to say on it: “All vows and bonds,” etc., “all of them shall be abolished and released, not valid and not binding.” And therefore the vow of the Tetragrammaton, which is tiferet, and the oath of Adonai, which is malchut, which they made concerning their exile — through chochmah and binah they shall be released and abolished, not valid and not binding; “and all the congregation of the children of Israel shall be forgiven” (Num. 15, 26). For chesed is water; gevurah, fire; tiferet, air. And therefore the sages of the Mishnah explained: The release of vows hovers in the air.
