Segment 1
The Faithful Shepherd opened (a variant reads: R. Simeon) and said: It is written in this portion, “But you shall present a fire-offering (isheh), a burnt-offering to the Lord.” And they explained it: the burnt-offering is for the fires; and therefore burnt-offering is set beside fire-offering. And further they explained it: the burnt-offering comes only for the thought of the heart.
Segment 2
Surely all the offerings come only to atone. Each and every offering is for all the limbs of a man, according to the sin of that limb. For the drops of the brain: “unleavened cakes, for it was not leavened” (Ex. 12, 39) — if he cast the first drops, before they had leavened, in a place that is not his. And for those that had leavened, and he cast them in a place where it was not needed, he must bring leavened bread for them; and the loaves of the thank-offering were thus: some of them leaven, and some of them matzah. Bullocks are from the side of judgement; lambs and rams and he-goats and goats — because they are the face of the ox — all of them are slaughtered in the north, and the receiving of their blood in vessels of ministry is in the north.
Segment 3
Slaughtering and receiving and sprinkling — all of them in the north: to sweeten the attribute of judgement, which comes to the court from the side of gevurah. The Great Court is from the side of gevurah, for binah is there; the Small Court is from the side of malchut. And all those who shed blood for a commandment are from the side of gevurah.
