Section 117 of 129 in Pinchas — 5 segments

Segment 1

And the masters of the Kabbalah are the masters of the Talmud. And of them it is said, “and you shall teach them diligently (ve-shinnantam)” (Deut. 6). And the sages of the Mishnah explained it: Do not read ve-shinnantam, but ve-shillashtam (and you shall divide them in three) — for they are a third in Scripture, a third in Mishnah, a third in Talmud. And the mystery of the matter: “If a bird's nest chance to be before you in the way” (Deut. 22, 6) — among the masters of Scripture. “And you shall make a candlestick of pure gold” (Ex. 25, 31): it has been explained — “And you shall make a candlestick”, a general statement; “gold”, a particular; “of beaten work”, a general statement. And how many verses there are which the sages of the Mishnah extend and limit, as in “it extended and it limited”! So too they extend: Do not read mah (what), but me'ah (a hundred). So too: Do not read ve-shinnantam — ve-shillashtam; but we expound from it: a third in Scripture, a third in Mishnah, a third in Talmud, as it is in Kiddushin.

Segment 2

So too: “On the day that Moses had made an end” (Num. 7, 1) — we expound kallat in it. And if you say that they expound them of themselves — how? From the alphabet, and not of their own accord; for they have no leave to add, nor to take away a letter from it (a variant adds: which is Vau), or to exchange one letter for another. Behold, kallot is written full in the Torah: who gave them leave to take away a letter from it, which is Vau? And behold, there is no word here that is exchanged by the alphabet! Rather, concerning these words that are defective which are full, and full which are defective, and concerning all the interpretations that they are able to make to adorn the bride with her ornaments, the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded that it be done as they say, and that they be believed. This is what is written, “According to the law which they shall teach you” (Deut. 17, 11).

Segment 3

It is like a craftsman who cut out the garments of royalty, and made of them many pieces. Those who know the places where these pieces are lacking, or those that are left over, repair those garments: they set the pieces that were in excess in the place of those that fall short, and to the pieces that are too small they add. And this is “according to the law which they shall teach you”.
