Segment 1
Ra'aya Meheimna. The Faithful Shepherd said: These words — how hidden they are to one who does not know, and how revealed to one who knows them! Surely that bird is the Shekinah; her nest, this is the Temple; and Israel are the young ones, upon whom the Mother sits. This is what is written, “and the mother sitting upon the young” (Deut. 22, 6); and they are the sages of the Mishnah, who blossom (parchin) in her commandments. “Or eggs”: they are the masters of Scripture.
Segment 2
And at the time that Israel sinned, and the Temple was destroyed, what is written? “You shall surely let the mother go.” This is what is written, “and for your transgressions was your mother put away” (Isa. 50, 1). And of the masters of the six orders of the Mishnah it is written, “but the young (banim) you may take for yourself”: for they are six, from the side of the six sons beneath the supernal Mother, which are in the six words of the Shema — or in the six orders of the Mishnah: “One who does much and one who does little, provided that he directs his heart to heaven.” And they bind them with the knots of the phylacteries, upon the head and upon the arm.
Segment 3
And with what do they take the young? With many chirpings of the voices of the Shema. And afterwards they whisper in a whisper, in the silent prayer, toward the mother and the daughter — and they are He, He — and they come down toward it, Vau, in its knot, which is Yod. And the upper He rests upon Vau: the phylacteries upon its head. The small He comes down toward Yod, which is the knot of the upper He upon the head of Vau; and it, Vau, is knotted with her in the He of the weak hand.
