Segment 1
Rab Hamnuna the Elder said: On this day Israel take only five young, and these are the five books of the Torah. And if you say they are six — rather, they are seven, with one bird that is found between the wings of the Mother. And Israel know how to hunt a good catch, great and precious. What do they do? They bring out that bird from under the wings of her mother; with a whisper of the mouth they whisper toward her, whisper after whisper.
Segment 2
And that bird, which heeds (a variant reads: which loves) those whispers and those voices that whisper toward her — even though she is under the wings of her mother, she lifts up her head and looks toward that whisper of the voice, and flies to them, and goes forth from under the wings of the Mother. As soon as Israel take her, they hold her fast, and whisper to her, and bind her with a binding, so that she should not fly off and go. At once Israel take her in that binding; and she wishes to fly and to go, and is not able to go.
Segment 3
And while she is bound in their hands, they whisper with their voices, and she chirps with them, and flies upward, and comes down. And all those young that are under the wings of their mother — as soon as they hear that chirping of their sister, and the whisper of that voice, at once they go forth from under the wings of their mother, and fly to that bird; and Israel take them and hold them. And were it not for that bird which they hold first, they would never fly to them, and they could not hold them.
