Segment 1א׳

(דברים כ״ב:ו׳) כִּי יִקָּרֵא קַן צִּפּוֹר לְפָנֶיךָ בַּדֶּרֶךְ מָארֵי מִקְרָא. בְּכָל עֵץ, מָארֵי מִשְׁנָה. דְּאִינּוּן כָּאֶפְרוֹחִים, דִּמְקַנְּנִין בְּעַנְפֵי אִילָנָא. אִית דְּאַמְרֵי, בְּכָל עֵץ, אִלֵּין יִשְׂרָאֵל. דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוּ, (ישעיהו ס״ה:כ״ב) כִּי כִימֵי הָעֵץ יְמֵי עַמִּי. אוֹ עַל הָאָרֶץ, אִלֵּין מָארֵי תּוֹרָה (ד"א משנה), דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוּ, עַל הָאָרֶץ תִּישָׁן וְחַיִּי צַּעַר תִּחְיֶה וּבַתּוֹרָה אַתָּה עָמֵל. אֶפְרוֹחִים: אִלֵּין פִּרְחֵי כְּהוּנָה. אוֹ בֵּיצִּים: אִלֵּין דְּזָן לוֹן קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מִקַּרְנֵי רְאֵמִים וְעַד בֵּיצֵּי כֵּנִים. וְהָאֵם רוֹבֶצֶּת עַל הָאֶפְרוֹחִים, בְּזִמְנָא דַּהֲווֹ קְרֵבִין קָרְבְּנִין. מַה כְּתִיב לֹא תִקַח הָאֵם עַל הַבָּנִים.

“If a bird's nest chance to be before you in the way” (Deut. 22, 6) — the masters of Scripture. “In any tree” — the sages of the Mishnah, who are like young birds that nest in the branches of the tree. Some say: “in any tree” — these are Israel, of whom it is said, “For as the days of a tree shall be the days of My people” (Isa. 65, 22). “Or on the ground” — these are the masters of the Torah (a variant reads: the sages of the Mishnah), of whom it is said: “On the ground you shall sleep, and a life of hardship you shall live, and in the Torah you shall toil.” “Young ones” — these are the blossoms of the priesthood (pirchei kehunah). “Or eggs” — these are they whom the Holy One, blessed be He, feeds, from the horns of wild oxen to the eggs of lice. “And the mother sitting upon the young” — at the time when offerings were offered. What is written? “You shall not take the mother with the young.”

Segment 2ב׳

חָרַב בֵּי מַקְדְּשָׁא, וּבָטְלוּ קָרְבְּנִין, מַה כְּתִיב, שַׁלֵּח תְּשַׁלַּח אֶת הָאֵם. וְגָלוּ הַבָּנִים, וְהַיְינוּ וְאֶת הַבָּנִים תִּקַּח לָךְ, מִסִּטְרָא דָּא' דְּאָת ו', דְּאִיהוּ עוֹלָם אָרוֹךְ דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ (דברים כ״ב:ז׳) לְמַעַן יִיטַב לָךְ וְהַאֲרַכְתָּ יָמִים, לְעוֹלָם שֶׁכֻּלּוֹ אָרוֹךְ.

The Temple was destroyed and the offerings ceased — what is written? “You shall surely let the mother go.” And the children went into exile; and this is “but the young you may take for yourself” — from the side of Aleph of the letter Vau, which is the long world, of which it is said, “that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days” (Deut. 22, 7) — in the world that is wholly long.

Segment 3ג׳

וּבַאֲתָר דְּקָרְבְּנִין, תַּקִּינוּ צְּלוֹתִין, וּמְצַּפְצְּפִין בְּקָלִין דְּשִׁירִין. בְּקוֹל דִּקְרִיאַת שְׁמַע, לְגַבֵּי עַמּוּדָא דְּאֶמְצָּעִיתָא דְּאִיהוּ לְעֵילָּא. דְּהָא אִימָּא וּבְרַתָּא בְּגָלוּתָא, וּמִיַּד דְּנָחִית, קַשְׁרִין לֵהּ בִּבְרַתָּא, דְּאִיהִי יַד כֵּהָה, לְמֶהֱוִי קָשִׁיר ו' עִם ה', בְּשִׁית סְפִירָאן. מִיָּד מְלַחֲשִׁין לְגַבֵּי חָכְמָה, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוֹד מַלְכוּתוֹ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד.

And in place of the offerings they instituted prayers, and they chirp with voices of songs — with the voice of the reciting of the Shema — toward the Central Column, which is above. For the mother and the daughter are in exile; and as soon as He descends, they bind Him to the daughter, who is the weak hand, so that Vau be bound with He, in six sefirot. At once they whisper toward chochmah: “Blessed be the name of the glory of His kingdom for ever and ever.”
