Segment 1
Rabbi Shimon began and said: "Blast the beast of the reed[s] (kaneh), the herd of bulls among the peoples, the calves" (Psalms 68:31). "Blast the beast" - that is the beast that Esav grabbed a hold of. "The reed" - We have learned that on the day that King Shlomo married the daughter of Pharoah, Gavriel appeared and planted a reed in the Great Sea, and the city of Rome was built upon it. What is a kaneh? It is the male of that evil beast, and it has a small side that grabs holiness. And that is that kaneh that he planted in the Great Sea. And because of that, it rules over the world. And about this rulership, it is written (Isaiah 19:6), "reed and rush shall decay." "Kaneh" - it is the rulership and head of all kingdoms. Moreover, kaneh - that the Holy One, blessed be He, has prepared to break it like this reed.
Segment 2
Observe: in Egypt she ruled, and from her there went out many dominions after their kinds, and all in the mystery of leaven. Once the Holy One, blessed be He, had broken her, He took out leaven and brought in matzah. With what? With the smallest thread of all He broke the Heth of chametz, and it was made matzah. These are letters. Rather, He broke the Heth of this beast (chayyah), which is called chametz. And therefore it is called “the beast of the reed”, for it is as easy to break as this reed. With what was it broken? With a thread as small as a hair He broke the Heth, and it passed from its strength, and it became matzah. And therefore it is written, “Rebuke the beast of the reed”: the Holy One, blessed be He, rebuked it, and the Heth of chametz was broken, and it was made He (a variant reads: and the Heth of chametz passed away and was lost).
Segment 3
And the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to break that reed in the same way: He will break the leg of the Koph from kaneh (reed), and hineh (behold) will remain. “Behold, the Lord God will come as a mighty one, and His arm will rule for Him; behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him” (Isa. 40, 10). What is “and His recompense (pe'ullato)”? This is the working (po'al) of that Koph (a variant reads: the working of that leaven) which He will break; and it is a recompense before Him: He will remove its leg, and it will be hineh — “A harbinger to Zion: Behold, behold them,” etc. (Isa. 41, 27).
