Segment 1
“And in your new moons,” etc. And how many heads are there to the moon? Surely the moon has no head but the sun, which is a head to her! Rather, two heads in each and every month; and these are Jacob and Joseph, who are renewed over the moon. And therefore one must renew her.
Segment 2
“Two young bullocks”: these are those of whom the moon said, How shall they make use of it together? And she diminished herself beneath them. “And one ram”: this is the ram of Isaac. And Abraham — where did he go? Rather, because Esau was aroused there, Abraham withdrew, so as not to see him. And who is he? The he-goat of the New Moon. (Two versions.) And because Esau, who is a he-goat, was destined to be aroused there, Abraham withdrew and was not found there. Isaac was found there, for his love toward him is like wine upon its lees. Jacob was found there, to break his face. Joseph, who is his ox (a variant reads: adversary), toward Rachel.
