Segment 1
The fourth palace. This palace is the one that is called (folio 7a) Guilt. And this is “the miry clay” (Ps. 40, 3), corresponding to the other name that is called Stone of Stumbling; and all is one. It is Guilt, because there stand all the sins of the world, the tipping of the scale by sins.
Segment 2
For when men sin, all those emissaries of judgement take those sins and set them down in this palace that is called Guilt. And all the merits of the world — all the holy angels that are appointed over the merits of the world take all those merits, and set them up in the fourth palace that is called Merit; and there stand the merits of men. And the sins stand in the other palace, that is called Guilt. And they are weighed together on New Year’s Day, for “God has made even the one as well as the other” (Eccl. 7, 14). And after the merits or the sins have tipped the scale to this side or to that side, so it prevails.
Segment 3
And therefore, on New Year’s Day, when these two sides are aroused, Merit and Guilt — and upon them depend life and death. If the merits have tipped the scale to this side that is called Merit, a man is inscribed on that side that is called Life. Because these two sides stand on that day, this on this side and that on that side. If that man is worthy, and those merits prevail, then that man is inscribed for life; because this holy side that is called Merit takes hold of him, and Life takes hold of him and says: This is mine, and mine it was. And then that man is inscribed for life. (A variant reads: and he is inscribed, until he is his.)
