Segment 1א׳

רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (הושע ו׳:ז׳) וְהֵמָה כְּאָדָם עָבְרוּ בְרִית שָׁם בָּגְדוּ בִי. מַאן יְגַלֶה עָפָר מֵעֵינֶיךָ אָדָם קַדְמָאָה, דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא פָּקִיד לָּךְ פִּקּוּדָא חֲדָא, וְלָא יָכִילַת לְקַיְּימָא בָּה. בְּגִין דְּאִתְפַּתִּית עַל מִלִּין בִּישִׁין, דְּאַסְטֵי לָּךְ הַהוּא חִוְיָא בִּישָׁא, דִּכְתִּיב, (בראשית ג׳:א׳) וְהַנָּחָשׁ הָיָה עָרוּם. וּבְגִין כָּךְ, אִתְפַּתִּית אֲבַתְרֵיהּ, וְגַרְמַת מִיתָה לְגַרְמָךְ, וּלְכָל אִינּוּן תּוֹלָדִין דְּנַפְקוּ מִינָךְ. תָּא חֲזֵי, דְּכָל מַאן דְּאִתְפַּתָּא אֲבַתְרֵיהּ וְנָחִית לְגַבֵּיהּ בְּרִגְעָא חֲדָא, יִתְאֲבִיד לְגַבֵּיהּ.

R. Simeon opened and said: “But they like Adam have transgressed the covenant; there have they dealt treacherously against Me.” (Hos. 6, 7) Who shall uncover the dust from your eyes, first Adam? For the Holy One, blessed be He, laid one precept upon you, and you were not able to keep it — because you were enticed by the evil words with which that evil serpent led you astray, as it is written “Now the serpent was subtle.” (Gen. 3, 1) And therefore you were enticed after him, and brought death upon yourself and upon all those generations that went forth from you. Observe: everyone who is enticed after him and goes down to him in one moment is lost to him.

Segment 2ב׳

תָּא חֲזֵי, דָּוִד הֲוָה קִיוּמָא נָעִיץ בִּמְקוֹרָא דְּמַיִין נַבְעִין, וְכַד אִתְדַּחְיָא לְאַרְעָא אַחֲרָא, וְצַעְרִין לֵיהּ, וּלְפוּם צַעְרֵיהּ אִתְדַּחְיָא מֵאַרְעָא קַדִּישָׁא. אַף עַל גַּב דְּנָחִית מִדַּרְגּוֹי לְדַרְגָּא תַּתָּאָה, קָם בְּקִיּוּמֵיהּ, וְלָא עָאל לְסִטְרָא אַחֲרָא, וְאִסְתְּמַר מִנֵּיהּ. מַה כְּתִיב (שמואל א כ׳:ג׳) וְאוּלָם חַי יְיָ' וְחֵי נַפְשֶׁךָ כִּי כְּפֶשַׂע בֵּינִי וּבֵין הַמָּוֶת. דְּהָא נָחִית בְּדַרְגּוֹי, עַד דְּהֲוָה בֵּיהּ הַאי שִׁעוּרָא. וְזַכָּאָה חוּלָקֵיהּ, מַאן דְּאִסְתְּמַר מֵהַהוּא סִטְרָא בִּישָׁא, וּמִכָּל דַּרְגִּין דְּהַהוּא סִטְרָא, דְּמִשְׁתַּכְּחֵי בְּעָלְמָא.

Observe: David was a pillar driven into the source of the flowing waters; and when he was thrust away to another land, and they afflicted him — and according to his affliction he was thrust away from the holy land. Even though he came down from his grades to a lower grade, he stood in his standing and did not enter into the other side, and he was on guard against it. What is written? “But truly, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death” (1 Sam. 20, 3) — for he came down in his grades until this measure was in him. And happy is the portion of one who is on guard against that evil side, and against all the grades of that side that are found in the world.

דְּכַמָּה סִטְרִין וְדַרְגִּין אִית לְיֵצֶר הָרָע: נָחָשׁ עֲקַלָּתוֹן. שָׂטָן. מַלְאַךְ הַמָּוֶת. יֵצֶר הָרָע. וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ. דְאַף עַל גַּב דְּבִשְׁמָהָן אִלֵּין אִקְרֵי, שֶׁבַע שְׁמָהָן אִינּוּן לֵיהּ: שָׂטָן. טָמֵא. שׂוֹנֵא. אֶבֶן מִכְשׁוֹל. עָרֵל. רָע. צְפוֹנִי. אִלֵּין אִינּוּן שֶׁבַע שְׁמָהָן, לָקֳבֵל שֶׁבַע דַּרְגִּין דְּהֵיכָלִין דִּילֵיהּ, דְּכֻלְּהוּ מִסִּטְרָא מִסְאֲבָא כִּדְקַאמְרָן. לָקֳבֵל אִלֵּין שִׁבְעָה שְׁמָהָן, אִינּוּן דְּאִקְרֵי בְּהוּ גֵּיהִנָּם, אֲתָר דְּאִתְּדָנוּ בֵּיהּ חַיָּיבַיָּא דְּעָלְמָא. וְאִלֵּין אִינּוּן: בּוֹר. שָׁחַת. דּוּמָה. טִיט הַיָּוֵן. שְׁאוֹל. צַלְמָוֶת. אֶרֶץ תַּחְתִּית. כָּל אִלֵּין שִׁבְעָה מָדוֹרִין דְּגֵיהִנָּם, לָקֳבֵל אִלֵּין שֶׁבַע שְׁמָהָן, דְּאִית לֵיהּ לְיֵצֶר הָרָע.

For the evil inclination has many sides and grades: the tortuous serpent; Satan; the angel of death; the evil inclination. And this has been explained. And although it is called by these names, it has seven names: Satan; Unclean; Enemy; Stone of Stumbling; Uncircumcised; Evil; the Northern One. These are the seven names, corresponding to the seven grades of its palaces, which are all from the unclean side, as we have said. Corresponding to these seven names are those by which Gehinnom is called, the place in which the wicked of the world are judged. And these are: Pit; Destruction; Dumah; Miry Clay; Sheol; Shadow of Death; Nethermost Earth. All these are the seven abodes of Gehinnom, corresponding to these seven names that the evil inclination has.
