Zohar, Mishpatim 8
Section 8 of 30 in Mishpatim — 7 segments
Segment 1
The next precept is to redeem the Hebrew servant and the Hebrew handmaid; to designate the Hebrew handmaid; to judge concerning the acquisition of a Hebrew servant; “you shall furnish him liberally”. This is as it is written, “If you buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve” (Ex. 21, 2). What is “six years he shall serve”, and what is his acquisition? But in the secrets of the Torah, Metatron is the servant of the Lord, comprising six directions, according to the number of his six letters, the six orders of the Mishnah. And by them a man must serve his Master, to be a servant to Him, to make himself the acquisition of His money; for money is the right hand — Abraham, whose grade is chesed — and from there the Torah was given.
Segment 2
And one who labours in it in order to gain merit for the world to come is called “acquisition”. “His money”: the world of longing. “Acquisition”: after the name of “God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth” (Gen. 14, 22). “Get wisdom, get understanding” (Prov. 4, 5) — he has acquired for himself words of Torah.
Segment 3
His master, after he has acquired him: “redemption shall be his”. There is one who is acquired to him for ever, and there is one who is acquired to him for six years. Of him who is acquired to him for ever it is written, “and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him for ever” (Ex. 21, 6). There is no “for ever” but the world of the Jubilee, which is fifty. And this is the recitation of the Shema, where there are twenty-five letters and twenty-five letters, evening and morning: the fifty gates of binah.
