Segment 1א׳

פִּקּוּדָא בָּתַר דָּא, לָדוּן בְּעֶרְכֵּי בַּיִת. וּבְרָזָא דְּחָכְמְתָא, בַּיִת דְּבַּר נָשׁ, דָּא אִתְּתָא. אִי אִיהִי אִתְּתָא דְּטוֹב וָרָע, וּבָעֵי לְהָמִיר רָעָה בְּטוֹבָה, יִפְדֶּה לָהּ מֵהַהוּא רָע, וְיָהִיב לֵיהּ עֵרֶךְ דִּילָהּ. אֲבָל אִתְּתָא דְּאִילָנָא דְּחַיֵּיא, אִתְּמַר בָּהּ (איוב כ״ח:י״ז) לֹא יַעַרְכֶנָּה זָהָב וּזְכוּכִית וּתְמוּרָתָהּ כְּלֵי פָּז, וְאֵין לָהּ עֵרֶךְ. כְּמָה דְּאִתְּמַר, (משלי י״ב:ד׳) אֵשֶׁת חַיִל עֲטֶרֶת בַּעְלָהּ. וְאִתְּמַר (משלי ל״א:י׳) אֵשֶׁת חַיִל מִי יִמְצָא וְגוֹ'. וְדָא שְׁכִינְתָּא. מַאן דְּגָמִיל חֶסֶד עִמָּהּ, לֵית עֵרֶךְ לְאַגְרָא דִּילֵיהּ. וּמַאן דְּחָאב לְגַבָּהּ, לֵית עֵרֶךְ לְעֹנְשָׁא דִּילֵיהּ.

A precept after this one, to judge concerning the valuations of a house. And in the mystery of wisdom, a man’s house is his wife. If she is a woman of good and evil, and he wishes to exchange the evil for good, he shall redeem her from that evil and give him her valuation. But of the woman of the Tree of Life it is said, “Gold and glass cannot equal her, neither shall the exchange of her be vessels of fine gold” (Job 28, 17); and she has no valuation. As it is said, “A woman of valour is a crown to her husband” (Prov. 12, 4); and it is said, “A woman of valour who can find?” etc. (Prov. 31, 10). And this is the Shekinah. Whoever deals kindly with her — there is no valuation for his reward; and whoever sins against her — there is no valuation for his punishment.

כַּמָה שְׁפָחוֹת אִית לָהּ דִּמְשַׁמְּשִׁין לָהּ, וְכָל חֲדָא וַחֲדָא מִנַּיְיהוּ, אִית לָהּ עֵרֶךְ. וְכָל חַד וְחַד צָרִיךְ פִּדְיוֹן. אֲבָל מַאן דְּיָרִית נִשְׁמְתָא, אוֹ רוּחָא, אוֹ נַפְשָׁא מִשְׁכִינְתָּא, לָא צָרִיךְ פִּדְיוֹן, דִּשְׁכִינְתָּא עָלָהּ אִתְּמַר (ישעיהו מ״ב:ח׳) אֲנִי יְיָ הוּא שְׁמִי וּכְבוֹדִי לְאַחֵר לֹא אֶתֵּן. דְּפִדְיוֹן דִּילָהּ בְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא תַּלְיָא. דְּאַמְשְׁכָן לָהּ (לגביה) יִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּקִשּׁוּרָא דִּתְפִילִּין, בְּאוֹת דְּשַׁבָּת, בְּאוֹת דְּיוֹמִין טָבִין, בְּאוֹת דִּבְרִית, וְתוֹרָה, בְּכַמָּה פִּקוּדִין. דְּפִדְיוֹן דִּילָהּ תַּלְיָא בְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (יחזקאל כ׳:ט׳) וָאַעַשׂ לְמַעַן שְׁמִי, וּבְגִינָה (ויקרא כ"ו) וְאַף גַּם זֹאת. הָכִי כַּמָה פִּקוּדִין אִינּוּן דְּעַבְדִין בְּנֵי נָשָׁא עַל מְנָת לְקַבֵּל פְּרָס. וְכַמָּה חוֹבִין. וּלְכָל פִּקּוּדָא אִית לֵיהּ עֵרֶךְ בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא. (ס"א אבל עונשא) וּלְכָל עוֹנְשָׁא לְמַאן דְּאַעְבָּר עָלַיְיהוּ, אֵין לֵיהּ עֵרֶךְ וְשִׁיעוּר.

How many handmaids she has that serve her, and each and every one of them has a valuation, and each and every one needs redemption. But one who inherits neshamah, or ruah, or nefesh from the Shekinah does not need redemption, for of the Shekinah it is said, “I am the Lord, that is My name; and My glory will I not give to another” (Isa. 42, 8). For her redemption depends upon the Holy One, blessed be He, since Israel draw her (to him) by the knot of the phylacteries, by the sign of the Sabbath, by the sign of the festivals, by the sign of the covenant, and the Torah, by many precepts. For her redemption depends upon the Holy One, blessed be He. This is as it is written, “But I wrought for My name’s sake” (Ezek. 20, 9); and for her sake (Lev. 26), “And yet for all that.” So too, how many precepts there are that men perform in order to receive a reward, and how many sins. And every precept has its valuation in that world (a variant reads: but the punishment); and for every punishment, for one who transgresses them, there is no valuation and no measure.
