Segment 1
A precept after this one, to judge concerning one who devotes his possessions to the priest. This is as it is written, “Every devoted thing in Israel shall be yours.” And the mystery of this (of man and of beast): “Every one that opens the womb of all flesh, which they offer to the Lord, both of man and of beast.” Rechem, the womb: by the transposition of its letters it is ramach, the reckoning of the two hundred and forty-eight limbs of a man; and of them it is said, “In wrath remember compassion” (Hab. 3, 2). After a man has been angry and devotes that beast to himself, there rests upon him the strange god, the serpent, of whom it is said, “Cursed are you from among all cattle” (Gen. 3, 14); and he is at the left of the man. Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded that it be given to the priest, who is mercy and blessing, so that the wrath may be subdued which was awakened in that man as gall, the sword of the angel of death; and the right is awakened toward him in mercy, and the wrath of the left is subdued. And this is “In wrath remember compassion.”
Segment 2
One who is angry, who has in his anger the poison of death — of him the sages of the Mishnah have explained: Whoever is angry, it is as though he worshipped idols. Because the other side burns within the man. And by that beast which he gives to the priest, the ban is separated from him; and Samael is a strange god, a ban, and his female is a curse, compounded of all the curses that are in Deuteronomy. And the Holy One, blessed be He, blessed the whole of the Torah, and all blessings are from the right, in which the priest holds fast. And therefore every banned thing must be given to the priest, who consumes it in fire and destroys it from the world; and the fire of the left is quieted by the right, which is water. And in it, “and the king’s wrath was assuaged” (Esth. 7, 10).
