A precept after this one, to set apart the great heave offering; and they have explained: two out of a hundred. What is a heave offering? Masters of the Academy: this heave offering, of which two out of a hundred must be set apart — in the mysteries of the Torah, what is it? Whoever wishes to taste of it, if he is a stranger he shall be put to death; and that is the strange god, Samael. For the Holy One, blessed be He, said, “And let them take Me a heave offering” (Ex. 28) — two out of a hundred, to unify Him twice in the day; that is, two out of a hundred, in the forty-nine letters of the Shema and of “Blessed be the name of the glory of His kingdom for ever and ever” at evening, and in the forty-nine letters of the morning, which are two short of a hundred. These are the supernal Shekinah and the lower; by both of them one must unify the Holy One, blessed be He. The cubit of them both, the measure of them both: “a hundred by the cubit.” Ammah, in its letters, is meah; and by the transposition of its letters it is ha-em, the mother.
Segment 2
And further, “And it shall be, that when you eat of the bread of the land, you shall set apart a heave offering to the Lord” (Num. 15, 19). Tarimu, you shall set apart — as in “it lifted up its hands on high” (Hab. 3, 10); and these are the ten fingers, whose ascent is to the ten sefirot, which are Yod-Vau-Daleth, He-Aleph, Vau-Aleph-Vau, He-Aleph, which amounts to forty-five. And in the letters of the alphabet, mah amounts to a hundred: Yod-Mem, He-Tzade. And this is what the Masters, the sages of the Mishnah, have explained concerning “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you?” (Deut. 10, 12); and they said: Do not read mah but meah — corresponding to the hundred blessings with which a man is bound to bless his Master every day. And this is what a man must taste every day for his Master; and therefore, “And let them take Me a heave offering.”
Segment 3
And how many heave offerings are there? There is a terumah (heave offering) that is from the Torah: Torah with Mem. And this is terumah, the Torah that was given in forty days. And if you should say that we have eaten of it (a variant reads: manna), it is written, “And Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread nor drink water” (Ex. 34, 28). Until now this heave offering was kept for the Holy One, blessed be He. And since the King did not eat, how should the servants eat? For only after He said, “I have gathered my myrrh with my spice” (S. S. 5, 1), and afterwards “Eat, O friends,” may His servants eat.
