Segment 1
Of him it was said to Abraham, “Get out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your father’s house” (Gen. 12, 1) — your house of birth, out of these houses of the moon, or the houses of Shabbethai, or the houses of Ma'adim. For of the houses of Ma'adim and the houses of Shabbethai and the moon it was said: one does not begin on Beth-Daleth (one does not begin on Beth and does not conclude on Daleth). For Ma'adim is the redness of the sun, Gehinnom, the mother of Esau, who was born on the second day. And the moon, she is good and evil: good in her fullness, and evil in her waning.
Segment 2
And because she is comprised of good and evil, Israel reckon by her and the children of Ishmael reckon by her. And when she is eclipsed in her fullness, it is not a good sign for Israel; and when she is eclipsed in her waning, it is an evil sign for the Ishmaelites. And of this, “and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish” (Isa. 29, 14) — the wisdom of the Ishmaelites; “and the prudence of their prudent men shall be hid” — for they do not know them from their creation, but only from their service, according to the change of the world in their courses and their service. And the moon was created on the fourth day, and in her waning is poverty. Lilith was created, Shabbethai, who is famine and thirst and the eclipse of the lights. Of her it was said, “Let there be me'orot, lights,” written defectively — me'erat: “the curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked” (Prov. 3, 33); “and the sinner shall be taken by her” (Eccl. 7, 26), in her prison-house, “and the righteous shall escape from her.”
Segment 3
And there is another star, a small point, pointed above the handmaid (a variant reads: the moon), which is me'orot; and this is a cholam. The daughter of the King, the Sabbath Queen: the dominion of both of them is on the seventh day, of which it is said, “that your man-servant and your maid-servant may rest” (Deut. 5, 14). For the order of their creation is not as the order of their service. And therefore the sun and Ma'adim, the red ones of Gehinnom, were created on the second day; the moon and Shabbethai were created on the fourth day, famine and darkness. And therefore one does not begin on Beth-Daleth: because Gehinnom was created on the second day, and the eclipse of the lights on the fourth day.
