Segment 1א׳

קוּם רַעְיָא מְהֵימְנָא, טוֹל אַבְנָא דָּא בִּידָךְ, דְּאִתְּמַר בָּהּ, (זכריה ג׳:ט׳) עַל אֶבֶן אַחַת שִׁבְעָה עֵינָיִם. לְתַבְרָא קְלִיפִּין דֶּאֱגוֹזָא, דְּהָא כַּמָה רוֹעִים פַּרְנָסֵי דָּרָא, אִתְכְּנָשׁוּ עַל הַאי אַבְנָא, דְּאִיהִי סֶלַע דִּילָךְ, לְאַפָּקָא מַיָּא מִתַּמָּן, דְּכַלָּה דִּילָךְ מַעְיַן הַחָכְמָה. בְּהַאי סֶלַע, דִּנְבִיעָא דִּילָהּ בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, בְּרָזִין סְתִימִין לֵית סוֹף. וְעָלָה אִתְּמַר, (איוב כ״ח:י״ב) וְהַחָכְמָה מֵאַיִן תִּמָּצֵא.

Rise, Faithful Shepherd, take this stone in your hand, of which it is said, “upon one stone are seven eyes” (Zech. 3, 9), to shatter the shells of the nut. For how many shepherds, the sustainers of the generation, have gathered over this stone, which is your rock, to bring out water from there; for your bride is the fountain of chochmah. In this rock, whose welling is in the Torah, in hidden mysteries without end; and of her it is said, “But wisdom, where shall it be found?” (Job 28, 12).

וְכָל תּוּקְפָּא דִּלְהוֹן לְאַעְבְּרָא קְלִיפָה דִּלְעֵילָּא, וְכַד מָטָן לַקְּלִיפָה תִּנְיָינָא, דְּאִיהִי תַּקִּיפָא, אִיהִי קַשְׁיָא לוֹן, וּמָחָאן בָּהּ כָּל יוֹמֵיהוֹן כֻּלְּהוּ, בְּלִישָׁנֵהוֹן דְּאִינּוּן תַּקִּיפִין כְּפַטִּישִׁין, וְלֵית לוֹן רְשׁוּ לְאַפָּקָא מִינָהּ מַיָּא. אֶלָּא אִלֵּין טִפִּין דְּנָפְקִין עַל יְדָךְ, בְּזִמְנָא דְּאִתְּמַר בָּהּ, (במדבר כ׳:י״א) וַיַּךְ אֶת הַסֶּלַע בְּמַטֵּהוּ פַּעֲמָיִם. וּבִמְחָאָה תִּנְיָינָא נַפְקֵי אִלֵּין טִפִּין. וְאִלֵּין אִינּוּן רְמִיזִין דְּחָכְמָה, רְמִיזִין דְּקַבָּלָה, דְּאִינּוּן בַּחֲגִיגָה, וּשְׁאַר מַתְנִיתִין. וְהַאי אֶבֶן לֵית מַאן דְּאַפִּיק מִינָהּ חָכְמָה, דְּאִיהִי מִלְּגָאו, דְּלֵית לָהּ סוֹף, (דאיהו מוחא מלגאו) בַּר אַנְתְּ, דְּאִתְּמַר בָּךְ הֲלָכָה לְמֹשֶׁה מִסִּינַי.

And all their strength is to pass beyond the uppermost shell; and when they reach the second shell, which is hard, it is difficult for them, and they strike upon it all their days, all of them, with their tongues that are strong as hammers, and they have no permission to bring water out of it — save those drops that come forth by your hand, at the time of which it is said, “and he smote the rock with his rod twice” (Num. 20, 11): and at the second striking these drops came out. And these are the hints of chochmah, the hints of Kabbalah, which are in Chagigah and in the rest of the Mishnah. And of this stone there is none who brings out from it the chochmah that is within, which has no end (which is the brain within), save you, of whom it is said: a Halachah given to Moses from Sinai.

Segment 3ג׳

פָּתַח רַעְיָא מְהֵימָנָא וְאָמַר, סָבָא סָבָא, אִית סֶלַע, וְאִית סֶלַע, אִית אֶבֶן, וְאִית אֶבֶן. אִית אֶבֶן דִּשְׁמָא דִּיְהוָֹ"ה, עָלָהּ אִתְּמַר (דניאל יב) וְאַבְנָא דִּי מְחָת לְצַלְמָא הֲוַת לְטוּר רַב. וְאִית אֶבֶן דְּאִיהִי (ויקרא כ״ו:א׳) אֶבֶן מַשְׂכִּית, דְּלֵית תַּמָּן נְבִיעוּ דְּמַיָּא דְּחָכְמְתָא, וְלָא דִּבּוּר.

The Faithful Shepherd opened and said: Elder, Elder! There is a rock and there is a rock; there is a stone and there is a stone. There is a stone that is of the Name of the Tetragrammaton, of which it is said, “and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain” (Dan. 12). And there is a stone which is “a figured stone” (Lev. 26, 1), where there is no welling of the waters of wisdom, and no speech.

Segment 4ד׳

אֶלָּא אֶבֶן דְּאִיהִי (חסר) סֶלַע, דְּמֹשֶׁה, עָלָהּ אִתְּמַר (במדבר כ׳:ח׳) וְדִבַּרְתֶּם אֶל הַסֶּלַע לְעֵינֵיהֶם וְנָתַן מֵימָיו. דְּאִיהִי בַּת קוֹל וְלָא תַּלְיָא בָּהּ אֶלָּא דִּבּוּר וּפִיוּסָא. אֲבָל שִׁפְחָה, סֶלַע אַחֲרָא, דְּאִתְקְרִיאַת (קליפה) מִשְׁנָה. נוּקְבָּא דְּעֶבֶד נַעַר. עָלָהּ אִתְּמַר, (משלי כ״ט:י״ט) בִּדְבָרִים לֹא יִוָּסֶר עָבֶד, אֶלָּא דְּמָחָאן וּמְתַבָּרִין מִינָּהּ כַּמָה פְּסָקוֹת, וְלַקְטִין לוֹן, וְאִתְקְרוּן לְקוּטוֹת. וְעַל דִּמְלַקֵּטֵי לוֹן, אִתְקְרִיאוּ לְקוּטוֹת, בְּלָא נְבִיעוּ דְּחָכְמָה וְקַבָּלָה.

But the stone which is (…) the rock of Moses, of which it is said, “and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water” (Num. 20, 8) — she is the heavenly voice, and nothing depends upon her but speech and appeasement. But the handmaid is another rock, which is called (a shell) Mishnah, the female of the servant, the lad. Of her it is said, “A servant will not be corrected by words” (Prov. 29, 19); rather, they strike her and break off from her many sections, and gather them, and they are called collections — and because they gather them they are called collections, without any welling of chochmah and Kabbalah.

אֲבָל סֶלַע דִּילִי, אִיהִי בְּרַתָּא דְּמַלְכָּא, בְּגִינָהּ אִתְּמַר, וְדִבַּרְתֶּם אֶל הַסֶּלַע לְעֵינֵיהֶם וְנָתַן מֵימָיו, בְּדִבּוּר וּפִיּוּס, כִּבְרָתָא דְּמַלְכָּא. וּבְגִין דְּמָחֵינָא בָּהּ, לָקֵינָא עָלָהּ, וְאִתְגְּזַר עֲלָנָא מוֹתָא. דְּמַאן דִּמְסָרֵב לְמַטְרוֹנִיתָא, חַיָּיב מִיתָה. כָּל שֶׁכֵּן מַאן דְּמָחָא לִבְרָתֵיהּ דְּמַלְכָּא. וּבְגִין דָּא אִתְגְּזַר עָלַי, דְּלָא אִיעוּל לְאַרְעָא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, וַאֲנָא קָבוּר בְּאַרְעָא נוּכְרָאָה, וְאִתְעַבְּרַת מִינִי. וְאִתְּמַר, (שמואל ב כ״ג:כ״א) וַיֵּרֶד אֵלָיו בַּשָׁבֶט. וְהַאי שֵׁבֶט, אִיהוּ חַד מִשִׁבְטַיָּא דִּילִי, דַּאֲנָא עָתִיד לְנַחְתָּא תַּמָּן לְמֶהֱוֵי עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּגָלוּתָא. וְכֹלָּא אִתְרְמִיז, וּבַאֲתָר אוֹחֲרָא אוֹקְמוּהָ מָארֵי מַתְנִיתִין. But my own rock, she is the daughter of the King; and on her account it is said, “and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water” — with speech and appeasement, as befits a daughter of the King. And because I struck her, I was punished for her, and death was decreed upon us; for one who is defiant towards the Matrona is liable to death, how much more one who struck the daughter of the King. And therefore it was decreed upon me that I should not enter the land of Israel, and I am buried in a foreign land, and she was taken from me. And it is said, “and he went down to him with a staff” (II Sam. 23, 21). And this staff is one of my own tribes, for I am destined to go down there, to be with Israel in exile. And all of it is hinted at, and in another place the Masters of the Mishnah have explained it. (…).
