Zohar, Idra Zuta 40
Section 40 of 43 in Idra Zuta — 4 segments
Segment 1
Until she was separated from his sides, and came to be joined with him face to face. And when they are joined, they appear as truly one body. From here we learn: a male alone appears as half a body, and all of them are mercy (a variant reads: and all of it is mercy); and so the female. And when they are joined together, all appears as truly one body; and so it is. Here too, when the male is joined with the female, all is one body, and all the worlds are in joy, for all of them are blessed from a whole body.
Segment 2
And this is the mystery of “Therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it” (Ex. 20, 11): for all is found in one whole body, for the Matrona has cleaved to the King, and one body is found. And therefore blessings are found on this day. And from here: whoever is not found male and female is called half a body; and blessing does not rest upon a thing that is blemished and lacking, but only in a whole place, upon a whole thing, and not upon half a thing; and half a thing does not endure for ever, and is not blessed for ever.
Segment 3
The beauty of the female is all from the beauty of the male. And we have already explained these words, and they are known among the Companions. From this female all those below take hold. From her they suck, and to her they return, and she is called mother to all of them. Just as the other is mother to the body, and the whole body (a variant reads: to the garden, and the whole garden) sucks from her, so this one is mother to all the others below.
