Section 12 of 43 in Idra Zuta — 2 segments

Segment 1

The nose. In this nose, in the nostril of the pardashka that is in it, the spirit of life blows to the Small of Countenance. And in this nose, in the nostril of the pardashka, a He hangs, to sustain another He below. And this spirit goes out from the concealed brain, and is called the spirit of life. And by this spirit they are destined to know wisdom in the time of the King Messiah, as it is written, “And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding,” etc. (Isa. 11, 2). This nose: life from every side, perfect joy, satisfaction, healing. Of the nose of the Small of Countenance (a variant adds: as we have explained) it is written, “Smoke arose up in His nostrils,” etc. (II Sam. 22, 9); and here it is written, “and for My praise I will refrain (echtom) for you” (Isa. 48, 9).

Segment 2

And in the Book of Agadah of the school of Rab Yeba the Elder the He is established in the mouth. But here it does not stand so, and does not combine (a variant reads: we did not need it), although it rises as one; rather, judgement hangs on the He, and judgement hangs on the nose, as it is written, “Smoke arose up in His nostrils.” And if you say: surely it is written, “and fire out of His mouth did devour” — the root of anger hangs on the nose.
