Section 44 of 52 in Idra Rabba — 4 segments

Segment 1

It has been taught: before the Ancient of Ancients prepared the adornments of the King, He built worlds and set in order adornments to endure. That female was not sweetened, and they did not endure, until supernal chesed descended (folio 289b); and they endured, and the adornments of the female were sweetened by this member which is called chesed. This is what is written: “And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom” (Gen. 36, 31) — a place where all judgements are found (a variant adds: and these are the adornments of the woman; it is not written 'which were' but 'which reigned'); and they were not sweetened until He set all in order, and this chesed went forth and settled in the mouth of the member. This is what is written: “and he died … and he died” — for they did not endure and were not sweetened: judgement within judgement.

Segment 2

And if you say: if so, that they are all of judgement — surely it is written, “and Shaul of Rehoboth by the River reigned in his stead,” and here no judgement is seen; for we have learnt that Rehoboth by the River is binah, from which fifty gates of lights and lamps are opened to the six sides of the world. It has been taught: all were judgement, except one that endured, the last. And this Shaul of Rehoboth by the River is one side, which spread out and went forth from Rehoboth by the River.

Segment 3

And none of them endured. Do not say that they were made void, but that they did not endure in that kingship (a variant adds: and on the side of the female), until this last of them all was aroused and spread out; as it is written, “and Hadar reigned in his stead.” What is Hadar? Supernal chesed. “And the name of the city was Pau” — what is Pau? By this a man who is worthy of the holy spirit cries out (pa'ei). “And his wife's name was Mehetabel” — here they were sweetened one by the other, and she is called 'his wife', which is not written of any of them.
