Section 45 of 52 in Idra Rabba — 5 segments

Segment 1

On His sides they are divided into arms and into legs. The arms of the male: one right, one left. The first arm (a variant reads: the holy arm) — three joints are joined in it, and the two arms are included. 'And they are included' — can you think so? Rather, three joints on the right and three joints on the left; the three joints of the right are included in the three joints of the left. And therefore 'arm' is written of only one. But of the right hand 'arm' is not written, but rather “Your right hand, O Lord” (Ex. 15, 6); it is called “the right hand of the Lord” (Ps. 118, 15), by the three joints of the patriarchs, who inherited them as their portion.

Segment 2

And if you say: surely the brain is found in three hollows of the skull — it has been taught: all three spread out and are joined through the whole body, and the whole body is joined to these three, and they are joined to the right arm. And therefore David longed and said: “Sit at My right hand” (Ps. 110, 1), because he joined himself with the patriarchs and sits there as a perfect throne. And therefore it is written: “The stone which the builders rejected,” etc. (Ps. 118, 22), because it sits at the right. That is what is written: “and you shall rest, and shall stand up to your lot, at the end of the right (hayamin)” (Dan. 12, 13); that is to say, as one who is worthy of the King's love. Happy is the portion of him to whom the King stretches out His right hand and receives him beneath His right hand. And this right hand, when it rests, the joints spread out.

Segment 3

And the arm does not stretch out its hand (a variant reads: and the joints do not spread out, and the arm does not stretch out; it rests) in the three joints we have spoken of. And when the wicked are aroused and spread through the world, three others are aroused, which are harsh judgement, and the arm stretches out. And when the arm stretches out, it is the right hand, but it is called “the arm of the Lord” (Isa. 51, 9), “Your outstretched arm” (Deut. 9, 29) (a variant reads: three joints are joined in it, and the three joints of the right and the three joints of the left are included in the three joints of the patriarchs, who inherited them as their portion. And if you say: surely they are found in the three hollows of the brain of the skull — it has been taught: all three spread out and are joined through the whole body, and the whole body is joined to these three, and they are joined to the right arm. And this right hand, when it rests (a variant adds: the joints do not spread out, and the arm does not stretch out, and it rests) in the three joints we have spoken of. And when the wicked are aroused, three others are aroused, which are harsh judgement, and the arm stretches out and is called “the arm of the Lord,” “Your outstretched arm”). At the time when these three are included in the three others, all is called right, and it performs judgement with mercy. This is what is written: “Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, Your right hand, O Lord, dashes in pieces the enemy” — because mercy is aroused in them.
